Apple TV Can't "Access iTunes Store" after UPDATE. The SOLUTION.

It has been a while since I updated my ATV2. The past update was the one which added the new "movies/TV Shows/Music/etc" icons to the bottom half of the welcome screen.

Tonight I purchased a movie from the iTunes store, then decided to update the ATV while i was cooking dinner... I came back to an updated ATV (updated to v5.2) and when I tried to accesss Movies, the ATV would start "Accessing iTunes Store" then do a soft reset... I thought this was odd, so then I tried to access the TV Shows and the exact same issue occured... I then tried to access Netflix and YouTube too see if there was a network issue, however there was no problem with those applications.... Finally I tried to access PodCasts, boom, soft reset yet again. *Interesting enough when I "mouse over" the Movies and TV Show icons, the ATV is able to pull the "Top Movies" from the store and display them.* - I found this rather strange, if it can access this... why not access the store???

I came to the conclusion that there was an issue with my ATV connecting to the iTunes store... for some reason everytime it attempts to access the store, it seems to bug out and cause a soft reset (the screen goes black, the light flashes, then I'm returned to the home screen).

IF YOU ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE OR A SIMILIAR ONE THERE IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION THAT I JUST FIGURED OUT. GO TO SETTINGS>ITUNES STORE>ACCOUNTS>SIGN OUT.... THEN SIGN OUT OF YOUR ITUNES ACCOUNT, THEN SIGN BACK IT... BOOOOOOM PROBLEM FIXED!!! WISH I TRIED THIS EARLIER..... ONLY TOOK ME 2 HOURS TO FIGURE OUT.

Unbelievable, yet another example of the poor quality of apple. I used to look forward to updates now I fear them. Whether it is a new iOS, itunes or apple TV update. It is riddled with errors; poor practices, poor programming and poor QA. "How many hours I am going to have to dedicate to finding fixes/work arounds for this update". What bothers me the most is many of these issues, like this one, or the numerous problems with even the latest version of iTunes are often 101 level errors that can not be blamed on legacy issues. Just poor programming. Apple brags about how they develop there computers from hardware (iPad, iPhone etc) to software in house. Maybe its time to think about specialization, because these errors cant persist. Ironically, after moving away from Microsoft products (I currently have 4 iPads, 3 iPhones, several iPod type devices and a Mac), it is now my Windows 8 tablet that I turn to for its reliablitiy and the windows phone is looking pretty attactive.

"I'd assume that the servers are down."

That is nonsense. There should not be another thread because it is part of the same issue. People starting other threads are likely only reporting what the system tells them when they try to access their music on the cloud from ATV, but it is he same core issue. You need to reset your settings, not restart and not to factory defaults (You will be given the option once you select reset from the menu.). You will see your music and movies immediately after you complete the set up process.

This thread alone shows that what appears to be a similar issue isn't resolved with the same steps for everyone and is perfect proof that posting your own problems in your own thread is the best way forward.

Not only is it best to do so because problems that appear similar often aren't, but because the majority of users providing solutions avoid these types of me too threads. I generally do and am really only posting here to try to avoid other users following your advice.

These updates work for the vast majority of users and whilst along the way there have been a couple of issues that fall at Apple's feet, the vast majority of these problems come from corrupt installs which are likely a result of the users own network problems.

I've been doing this for 29 years and nothing ever changes. That response is a typical IT "It's not my fault" kind of response at the very heart of why these recurring problems are unadressed.

First of all let me say it has absolutely nothing to do with how their networks are set up, perhaps next we will blame their ISP. It is the same network they were using prior to the update. Update occurs and error follows means the most likely canidate is the software update. Especailly when one considers it is not isolated. Perhaps we all pulled from the same corrupt server or Apple has a history of really poor regression testing....

The login information is the core of the problem and from what I read there are two variations. But lets assumme that it was everyone's network that caused corrupt packets of data. What you are saying is we all have incorrectly set up our network to corrupt the exact same part of the update. Perhaps if it were the only change but it was not. The network does not discriminate between packets in a way that would lead to us all have two possible variants. The probability that everyone recieved only two variations of the exact same problem is so small that one would feel comfortable saying it is impossible.

This is a recurring issue with apple, across multiple software packages (you that virus called iTunes). The reason why it is happening over and over again is because the consumers are not holding them accountable. They are scratching their heads and saying "ummm, maybe we should bring in an expert to check our network." Apple TV is a completely contained enviroment. What I mean by that is there is no way the average consumer can really tamperr with the software. Apple owns it from ground up and controls what software is on it. Here we more than anywhere else we can certqainly lay the blame at their feet.

Hi

Are you sure it is the Apple TV2? Just before Xmas I upgraded to iTunes 11. Prior to the upgrade everything was working fine, but now there is a problem with home sharing, and I can tell you that I had the same problem when I updated to iTunes 10, and that problem was not resolved until Apple upgraded iTunes to 10.6,( approx 3 months) which is the server for the Apple TV2. I can stream films from Netflix without any problem in fact use any of the apps on my AppleTV2, but when it comes to using home sharing it will play one song, then I go into my study deactivate/ activate home sharing play the next song and so on. If it is a film it streams the film until the end then lose the connection with iTunes. Frustrating!

Wrote an e-mail to Tim Cook last Thursday 30.02.13 explaining the situation. You'll never guess what happened next.

Yesterday I got a phone call ( no not from Tim) from Apple in Ireland and they connected me with an Apple senior engineer, with whom I spent nearly 45 minutes talking to. He tried lots of tests to no avail. He even listened to songs over the telephone to here when it lost the connection. By the way if you restart the Atv2 you also get the Home sharing connection back. He tried AirPlay and that worked perfectly.

In the end he said that he will investigate further and then ring to me at 10:00 am today the 5.02.13. He also said that it was highly improbable that it was a network issue and that it was most probably a software problem.

That's what I call service, and they have ensured me that it wont cost me a single penny, the service is gratis/without payment.

I am just waiting for him to ring.

Kind regards
