Adobe reader was blocking me from seving PDF files to my desktop - they were empty containers.

I know this is from a while ago, but my Internet Plug-ins folder is COMPLETELY empty. Not a single file in there. I went: Go/(hold down option)Library/Internet Plug-Ins to be greeted with nothing more than an empty folder. Can you help?

Hi @neil0123 : you must have a look into the "/Library/Internet Plus-Ins/" folder and not the "~/Library/Internet Plus-Ins/" folder !!

Little reminder:

- "/Library" is at the root of your startup hard drive, always visible, require administrator password for modification because changes affect every users

- "~/Library" is in your user folder, by default hidden, changes into it only affect the user to whom it belongs

Sadly, I have the experience today of a new system, running 10.9.4, that is insisting on displaying PDFs in Safari instead of downloading them. There is no Adobe anything on this machine. I did run Migration Assistant, primarily to bring over user accounts from a previous machine, and I find I have the folioing in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins:

DefaultBrowser.plugin (created 1/17/2014)

iPhotoPhotocast.plugin (1/14/2009)

nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt (1/15/2014)

Quartz Composer.webplugin (8/25/2013)

QuickTime Plugin.plugin (1/15/2014)

Before I start moving all of them to a Disabled folder, does anyone have a clue to get Safari simply to download PDF files for a near-virgin system that's never experienced the Curse of Adobe?

Sorry to respond to my own post, but of course, 5 minutes after I'd given up, I rephrased my search and found a solution at http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/106660/how-make-safari-7-open-pdf-files -in-preview-instead-of-opening-them-in-page

namely, from the command line:

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES .

You will get a blank page in Safari, but the PDF file will be downloaded to Downloads, or wherever you have Safari put downloads.

I'm afraid I've followed the internet plug in instructions and now have no .pdf files in my internet plug in folder. Have restarted my Mac, yet Adobe Reader (%^&* ^&(*%$ of a program) is still wanting to open pdf's, not only in Safari, but now in Mail.

Please, please help me as I'm desperate to open a pdf in Mail that I must print off and complete.

Have you tried Adobe's recommended trick in reverse, of opening a Get Info window (using right-click and pull-down, or Command-I) on a PDF document, changing the "Open with" to Preview, and clicking "Change Al...?"

I use Evernote as my pdf reader, so can't change it. But, I've found out that the document I'm trying to open is only able to be opened in Adobe Reader, which is why I'm having so much trouble.
Strange thing is, my Windows computer has Adobe Reader and I can't open it in that one either in Google Chrome!

Ah well, I'm requesting the sender sends the doc in normal pdf format.

Hope you were able to get a readable version. I know just enough about Windows to get into trouble, so I'm not going to try to give advice where I have no expertise at all.

That said, I have seen several PDF files, created with (I believe) recent versions of Adobe Acrobat under Windows (7?), that are heavy in forms and will not display in Preview. Instead, what appears is a legend informing you that you have to use Adobe Reader to read the file. Neat, huh? What's worse is that the forms are even more obnoxious when viewed in Reader: one can enter content in pre-defined fields and print the result, but not save it as a PDF. A couple of times, I've just used screen capture and edited the thing with Photoshop.

Joseph, I think that is the problem. All I'm getting is a message 'Please wait...if this pdf is not displaying properly etc.etc. I'm still running XP as I hate the others. I've asked the sender to post it to me as I'm absolutely fed up to the back teeth with this whole issue!
