Newsstand??

I subscribed to a magazine and the directions say it will download to Newsstand. I have an iPad 2 and there isn't that app on it. The mag went to my desktop and I have to sign in to read an issue. I searched for Newsstand but could not find where to download it or how to make it go to Newsstand if I had it.

This should all work seamlessly.

After you transfer purchases (free ones are considered purchases for all interest and purposes) iTunes should backup the iPad, wipe the iPad, download and install the update and then restore the iPad and it will finish with a sync of iTunes and all of the content, apps, data, music - everything - should be restored to the iPad.

As part of the update and restore process, iTunes will (in order):

  1. Back up key elements of your device, such as settings, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, and your Camera Roll1. iTunes will not, however, back up media content from your iOS device, such as music, apps, books, movies, and TV shows.
  2. Update your device to the latest version of iOS software.
  3. Restore your device from your most recent backup.
  4. Restart your device.
  5. Sync back media content from your iTunes Library to your device2.

If you transferred all of the purchases into iTunes, the apps should have synced back at the end of the updating process. So try this.

Connect the iPad to your PC with the cable and launch iTunes if it does not start on its own. Enable the sidebar again if you need to do so. Click on the iPad name under the devices heading, then click on the Apps Tab at the top of the iTunes window on the right. You will see a list of all of your apps. Click on the Sync Apps heading to make sure that it is selected - put a checkmark in the box next to the heading. Then go down through the list of Apps and click on Install for any apps that are not already on the iPad. Then click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes.

You can also download your apps again in the Purchased tap of the App Store directly on your iPad. Go to the App Store, tap on the purchased tab and then tap on Not on this iPad. You will see all of the apps that did not reinstall. Download ONE app at a time until you have recovered all of the apps that you want.

Thank you 100 times. I'm installing about 20 now with 25 installed. I have 4 screens so far to sort. I did it on the iPad. The Store had some I forgot I had! I just need to know where on my laptop the backup is so I can copy to a flash drive.

This has been a huge learning experience for me. I bookmarked this as I have no long-term memory and plan to backup monthly. Next time I will try the Cloud,

Your backups are stored for you automatically in iTunes. The location of the backup folder depends on what operating system you are running.

Remember something, it is OK to copy your backup folder to an external hard drive, a flash drive, to another location on your desktop - but do not remove the backup folder from the location that it is in. iTunes needs to be able to find the backup in the default location in the event that you ever need to restore for the backup.

Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer

The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.

iTunes places the backup files in the following places:

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
  • Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.
