Java update 11 for Macos 10.6.8 plugin inactive

Apple disabled both Java 6 and Java 7 for browser use again. You'll have to wait for Update 12 to appear in Software Updates. I read that it's in beta test, but no telling how long it may be.

Anyone found a way to go around this yet? I happen to NEED Java in my browser to be able to work, which Apple appears to completely disregard.

If I knew of a way I would not post it here and be responsible for the consequences. Are you self-employed or is there some IT person that gets paid to help with things like that?

I'm reaonably sure that Apple took that possiblity into consideration when they apparently waited a couple of days before posting the block, but you might want to give them some feedback either at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html or possibly get help from http://expresslane.apple.com/.

The only people responsible for the consequences of an action are those performing the action. I have admin rights on my machine, therefore I make the decisions. Incidentally, it's also me who should decide whether I should disable Java due to its security risks. Not Apple.

Found a workaround here: http://thenextweb.com/apple/2013/01/31/for-the-second-time-this-month-apple-bloc ks-java-7-on-os-x-10-6-and-up-to-protect-mac-users/ -- essentially, restore /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/Xprotect* to versions before Jan 27th.

The following command in Terminal will re-enable Java 6 on OSX 10.6 and upwards:

Java plugin can be un-blacklisted using this command

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Delete :JavaWebComponentVersionMinimum" /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta. plist

This did the trick on OS x 10.6.8

It will stay that way until the next XProtect update is sent out (v55). Java update 12 will not reverse it, but should work fine without needing to do anything further.

Alternatives if you must run Java 7

If Apple disabled Java 6 in 10.6, and you can't upgrade OS X to 10.8, then your pretty much done with Java in OS X because Oracle won't issue updates for Java 6 anymore.

However you can install Windows 7 and continue to use Java 7+ there until support for Windows 7 ends in 2020. 🙂

Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?

If your on 10.6, I very highly recommend the free Virtualbox for the virtual machine software as it gets updates, VMFusion and Parallels have moved on with only 10.7+

There is some very good advice here and I agree with a lot of what you've said, but I think you overlooked a couple of facts with regard to this statement.

Yes, Apple has disabled Java SE 6 1.6.0_37 for Safari, and perhaps other browsers.

But Oracle has released two updates, 38 on Dec 11 last year and 39 today http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/6u39-relnotes-1902886.html. It's conceivable they could issue more updates during the month of February, but I'm sure they would have to be emergencies.

According to Linc Davis, Apple has release 38 in developer preview testing, so I would expect that to be posted at some point in the future. I certainly expect they will put 39 on a fast track to patch however many of those 50 CVE's are also in Java 6.

The link at Apple's download for Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 12 gets redirected to update 11. This is broken and I don't expect any fixes until after the weekend.
