WARNING - Apple TV 5.2 update - AVOID!!!

I had a lot of problems getting Apple_TV_3 + itunes to work 100% reliably. Eventually I built a totally new server, used static ip's and I DID get a stable system that ALWAYS worked as expected re itunes home sharing -> Apple_TV.

Home sharing to iphone/ipad was hopeless (via music/video apps), the circle spinner would go for 10+ mins without listing the media. I therefore ran TVersity on the server and using the AirPlayer app on iDevices can play media fine so no longer use the build in apps, unless for media local to the device.

Since updating to 5.2 all appeared to be working well, however if Apple_TV has not been used for a few hours and I run the remote app, I CAN initially use the control part of the app, BUT pressing computer says "turn on home sharing blah blah blah..." If I then hit the button to list the devices, the updated ATV device is NO longer shown. However my OTHER Apple_tv (still on 5.1) IS still there, even though it has been sleeping for days. Both were 100% reliable before this.

I've done a Reset on the updated Apple_TV and set it to sleep after 15 mins and will monitor progress. I've downloaded the 5.1 ipsw, I hope Apple are STILL signing it. I'll test for another day or two but it it happens again I'll downgrade. If YOU have a stable system I would advise NOT upgrading to 5.2.

Does someone know what ports to block on router to stop the ATV checking and therefore relentlessly prompting you to upgrade, that's the only reason I upgraded to stop the messages.

Lastly since buying into apple-technology 2.5 years ago for the sole reason of anticipated reliability as though I have the ability I do not have the time to endlessly jump through hoops to make devices work as intended I have become very disillusioned. Unfortunately Apple seem to be just as hopeless as everyone else, re reliability, do they test anything?

i have 5 ATV3 devices at home

after the update i have the same issues on 4 devices as described here.

the 5th ATV3 did not update to 5.2 :-(

but i can clearly see that the other 4 went away after going to sleep and the only thing is to restart the ATVs

5.2 is absolutly crap

That implies quite strongly that it's your set up that has the problem, I have 4 2's and 3's as well as others at my offices, they all work just fine.

but i have no idea where the error should be located in my setup

all wired Gigabit NW with 37 Ports so far

all things works fine -> till the new ATV update came out.

but remember : a update before did not work over Ethernet....Apple had problems with wired ATVs in the past.

i work since 12 years in IT

my setup at home is absolutly OK and up to date.

ATVs worked with old FW nearly perfect -> 5.2 came out -> all crap = logic is : ATV update is buggy

i take one ATV and restore it with iTunes to 5.2 .... hope that helps

Yes we all know about that and it was entirely reproduceable.

ATVs worked with old FW nearly perfect ->

But it didn't for others and they were saying the same thing as you are saying now, but clearly in your case 5.1 was fine.

logic is : ATV update is buggy

It isn't for me and many others.

I'm not dismissing your issues or your observations, just pointing out that whatever your issue is, you can probably fix it without waiting for an update, which won't fix problems that don't exist.

To All,

What difference does it make ? Wired, Wireless, USB, it should work at all times. Me, over 30 years of experiences in IT and Installing, building computers and more. LAN, WAN, SAN, SERVERS, Thin Client, PC's, Laptops, iPads, iMacs, Macs, you name it.

At home D-Link 16 port switch with Fiber Optics, FTC Wired and Wireless, Modem Routers, Cascading Routers. Always easy to get working.

Then.............. first time I am buying Apple TV's add to the network..... then trouble. Now what is it then ? Apple TV or my setup ? Bull. Not my setup. It's Apple TV and their terrible firmware updates that get stuck with the hardware because I can see it happening with iPad 6.1 also. All of sudden I am not even updating the IOS 6.01 ends up in the Recycle bin, computer that was involved in it USB ports disappeared, no Apple iPad connection anymore and had to do a total reset and restore, plus restore imaging my computer that was involved.

Telling me it is not Apple ? My foot. It is Apple, they manipulate your systems while you are doing something else.

This is all done so that Mr. Tim Cook can have another presentation in March about how many million units they have sold to ignorant sheepl that follow Apple Cult. And I have fallen for it too, but wait, not again ok !!!

I worked before for Apple in the 90's headoffice in the Netherlands and that behaviour was not there, it is now. There was great care in customer support. Today it is shuffling boxes with faces behind counters, Here, please don't come back.

I don't care what they think, but I have enough experience in that field. I am old enough to see the difference.

u are right

ATV has only one Mission = plug in and it works

if this is not given -> absolutly ****

Then we will not agree.

There has to be assumed conditions in that statement, such as having electricity, a network and an internet connection, so far as I'm concerned having a standard working network is one of these conditions.

I have an ATV that only a few months old. Worked fine until 5.2. Now the WiFi is contantly not just dropping out, it's "going away". IOW, it will loose connection randomly. If you go into the network settings and scan, no networks are found. Only a hard power cycle will get the WiFi going again. Rests, restarts, etc won't do it. It's as if the WiFi NIC is simply shutting down randomly and not coming back without a full power down. To verify it's not being triggered by my home network in some way, I brought the ATV into work this morning which has a really high end enterprise wireless system and the same thing happend. At home I have the latest gen Airport Extreme 10 feet from the ATV. So it's definitly a bad firware revision causing my ills.

@cameronproaudio Actually, this could be hardware failing. If you look here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4350553?tstart=0 :: several people began having this issue in september 2012, some even earlier. Some have gotten it fixed by resetting or restoring to earlier versions. Others have had them replaced by Apple. I personally have had 2 replaced by Apple and havent had issues with them since.

Feb 11, 2013 2:47 PM in response to Quantum Dragon

I believe you are correct Mr. Dragon. I just tried a firmware back rev to 5.1.1, that didn't help. The WiFi died again right after I got done putting in my Apple Store credentials. I put them in, went to cue a previously purchased movie, and before it could even start to load the buffer, the connection was gone. Then I back rev'd to 5.0.2. Same problem and the WiFi shuts down even faster. I then hooked up an ethernet conenction and did the update back to 5.2. No joy, lucky to get WiFi to come up at all after a few restarts. Looks like bad hardware. I had spoken to an Apple Care person on Friday who recommended a restore of 5.2 since I had not yet tried that. No joy with that of course. Seems the 5.2 update has somehow partially bricked the WiFi hardware for good. Time to swap at the Apple Store which is 50 mi away 😟
