From a previous answer to this question:

Buy one from the iTunes Store and install it, or create one yourself and sync from iTunes.

Here's the step-by-step screen capture for your easy reference! 😉

Step 1: This is the home page (summary page) you'll see once you connect your iPhone to your computer.
Now, select the "Done" button at the top right hand corner.

Just used the steps in this thread and got things working fine. It seems counter intuitive (creating/converting an AIFF to an ACC, then dragging it to the Desktop and deleting it from iTunes and then editing the suffix and then...) Just do it. It works. Part of the problem is that converting an AIFF to (supposedly) an ACC actually ends up with the file having ".m4a". "I thought I asked to convert it to "ACC"?! Well, you did, but its generic type/suffix is still m4a. ;-)

Hi Maria / Hi Everyone,

First you have to login iTunes before your sync RingTones. Otherwise you won't be able to add tones. Follow these steps.

1. Open iTunes. Click on the small icon from the top left corner (which may contain iTunes settings)

2. From the drop down menu, Select 'iTunes Store". Select "Sign In". Sign In please.

3. Authorize your computer now. It's in the same list/menu (You may ask to enter Apple ID & Password)

4. Now go to iTunes "Tones" section. Put a tick on "Sync Tones" and select "Selected tones"

5. Again go back to the previous icon, click on it and select "Add files to Library" (This option is unavailabe without Signing In)

6. All right, now a window will pop up. Find your tones & select (you must have backups in your PC). Click Add/Open to finish adding tones. Selected tones will be added and appear under the tones section.

7. Now select tones which you want to add (Put a tick)

8. Click "Sync" button from the Bottom. Now go to the iTunes "Summary" page and again click "Sync" button from the bottom.

You are DONE. Check your phone's, Settings > Sounds > Ringtone

I followed the advice in Jim Hdk post link:

http:/How to sync ringtones to your iPhone - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3792

the ringtone i had created would show in the itune Tones library on my Mac but not transfer to the iphone Tones library.

This was resolved by unticking the m4r track in my Mac itunes Music library; then synching again as per Jim's post.

Sounds strange but it worked for me

I hope this helps

I had a similar problem. The tone showed in itunes app section but refused to go into the tones section and it wasn't syncing to my phone (iphone 4s). After much frustration I got fed up and simply made a folder on my desktop called "TONES" then added the ringtone into that folder. Then, I pulled up iTunes and clicked on the tones section. Went back to the folder on my desktop and simply moved the ringtone with my mouse into the tones section on iTunes. It went right in! Afterwards, I went to the top of itunes and clicked on File, devices and, 'sync device.' The ringtone went to my phone.
