iWeb publishing nightmare

Hi everyone,

I just updated to iWeb 1.1 via software update, and now I can't publish anything to my .Mac page. I updated, and then made a new page (within my we site) in iWeb. I then pasted a long text-document from Pages in it, and hit Publish. It "created" the page, then said it would upload it. Well in the last step of uploading, I got an error saying "An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/iWeb/Site/Rotary-2006 files/DSC01793framed.png”."
That file path is pointing to a page (a photo album) that was already published, and had been on the web for a while. I haven't deleted any of the pictures associated with it, so I don't know why it's having a problem. But none of the pictures are in the .png format, so I think the _framed.png portion of that file path may be pointing to one of iWeb's template files.

I even tried removing that photo page and re-publishing, but then it picks another picture out of another page that, again, should not be affected with this uploading a new text-only page.

Any one had the same problem?

Thanks!

A nightmare indeed. Here's a rough workaround I've discovered after two days banging my head against a wall. I continue to get errors but at least I've managed to restore some semblance of my site.

1. Log into iDisk and delete all files in the iWeb folder, plus the index file outside it. That's a subfolder in Sites: idisk>sites>iweb or suchlike.
2. Launch iWeb. File > Publish all to .Mac"
3. Ignore the usual error referring to a problem with an image file of some description. The site is still publishing in the background, so do not quit iWeb and do not close the window. For that matter, don't even click the OK button on the error message (ok, I don't know if that does anything or not but paranoia has become deeply ingrained over the last 24 hours)
4. Wait. And wait. And then wait some more. Check Network in Activity Monitor: hey, you're still downloading! iWeb just doesn't know about it.
5. Make a cup of tea. Keep waiting.
6. Tentatively visit your site, by typing the URL into your browser rather than doing anything from within iWeb
7. Something resembling your site will have appeared. The page with the error message-d image, alas, will probably not run a slide show or allow larger images to be displayed upon clicking the thumbnails, but - well, it's better than nothing.

Worked for me, anyway. Hope this helps. And I REALLY hope they fix this soon.

Agreed. The same could be said about your car when it breaks down, your roof when it leaks in the most torrential rainstorms in a decade, your shoes when they get a hole, your cell phone when it drops a call, your computer when it... You get the point. The fact that you paid money does not entitle you to a flawless and enjoyable experience in anything in this world (when was the last time you paid to see a movie for example).

Thanks for the pragmatic reality check W.C. I'm sure that Apple engineers are working overtime trying to ascertain the exact nature of the problem.

Oh, shut up. If I pay to see a movie, the movie works. It plays on screen. If I buy something and it doesn't work as advertised, I take it back.

Well bugs or not I still think iWeb is a great product and I have never had an issue with paying for .Mac service. I am disappointed that such an apparent bug got by Apple but you know what they say.. My website is up and running.. looks great, runs great (asside from Search). It also appears to look even better on IE. So 1.1 isn't a total loss, just a minor irritation.. for me at least.

Given time I'm sure this too shall pass. Can't hit a home run everytime.

Such Anger, you really should relax. I'm sure every movie you pay to see in a Theater was a Blockbuster, Oscar Winner and Well Writen.

Responding to people in such a way does not promote openness and clear communication on these boards.

Sorry your having a bad day.

Thought I was going nuts! Glad I looked into this forum.
My site is for business too, and it looks very unprofessional right now.
They better fix it quick!
The reason I used iWeb and a Mac is the very reason it was created, for non computer experts!
All morning I looked at the errors and tried to fix them, deleting and restoring, and then decided it was in the original templates...
Hope there is an easy fix today User uploaded file

Yes, I had the same problem. I tried to make a minor update to the site and clicked on publish all to mac and everytime I did it I got a different error. If i just click publish to mac it tells me to publish ALL to mac. WHen I tried that, I got another error. Now I am not able to access the site or anyone else.

Hope its fixed soon as I am surprised by apple that they could release a product with a key bug.

We have every right to be upset about this matter. I'm not saying that everything should work perfectly every single time, I'm more pragmatic and experienced than that.

However, I am saying that it only takes a breif look at these discussion boards to realize that this was a major snafu.

I expect the thousands of dollars I've spent on hardware/software/services to work as advertised. Why is that unreasonable?

Yet, none of this is really the point here so I'll just leave it alone. What's at issue is that there is a flaw and that it needs to be fixed.

Comments and search are still not functioning. iWeb still indicates my pages as unpublished when in fact they are up. Errors are reported each and every time I publish an update.

Can you give us more detail?

So far we are seeing

1. Error messages related to image files. PNG or JPG with only the option to click OK. The image file or related page is different each time you attempt to publish.
However, after clicking OK iWeb continues to upload data with no indications in the software only an increase in outbound traffic seen in Activity Monitor.

2. iDisk Quota Error - every now and then, restarting iWeb seems to correct this. Seems to happen after repeated attemps to publish.

This thread is related to publish failures due to image files. If you are recieving a different kind of message related to image files.. let us know.
