iWeb publishing nightmare

Hi everyone,

I just updated to iWeb 1.1 via software update, and now I can't publish anything to my .Mac page. I updated, and then made a new page (within my we site) in iWeb. I then pasted a long text-document from Pages in it, and hit Publish. It "created" the page, then said it would upload it. Well in the last step of uploading, I got an error saying "An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/iWeb/Site/Rotary-2006 files/DSC01793framed.png”."
That file path is pointing to a page (a photo album) that was already published, and had been on the web for a while. I haven't deleted any of the pictures associated with it, so I don't know why it's having a problem. But none of the pictures are in the .png format, so I think the _framed.png portion of that file path may be pointing to one of iWeb's template files.

I even tried removing that photo page and re-publishing, but then it picks another picture out of another page that, again, should not be affected with this uploading a new text-only page.

Any one had the same problem?

Thanks!

Aaron Boatwright

I think this is a mistery that Apple will have to solve. I watched my iDisk as well to see if file sizes increased as iWeb kept uploading after its error message. The finder window for iDisk was painfully slow.

The domain file on my computer reports the size of my website as being over 300 mb, however on iDisk the website is no larger than 43.1 mb in size. This never changes each time I attempt to Publish. I have a lot of pictures on my site and I find it hard to beleive it is only 43.1 mb in size.

I have a feeling we will have to wait for a solution from Apple on this one.

Exporting and Manualy uploading the file to .Mac provides the same results.. page appears online but Counter, Comments and Search features do not function. RSS may work fine as it is not a .Mac specific feature.

Your site is compressed when it is uploaded, resulting in this apparent inconsistency.

Wouldn't worry too much about the size of your domain file in relation to your published site. The domain has stuff your site doesn't and vice-versa.

Here is what I'm doing at the moment:

I have started a publish:- at the moment it is still running, I am also logged onto my idisk from another mac. I am watching the mod dates of the files and trying to keep track of the files that are being modified. At present this isn't too important, but should I get an error message at say 3.00 am, if I then see a mod date appear on my other mac of 3.01 am or later we know what is happening don't we

What would be interesting while I wait for my publish to fail is if anyone has any thoughts on whether I click OK when the error message occurs or leave it running.

I also have activity monitor running just for good measure.

( Sorry about my typing at this stage, my eyes are giving up)

Same here in New Zealand. I tried to publish 20 - 30 times and it came up with an error message right at the beginning each time. Errors are ranging from "could not read disk quota" over "could log on .mac" to "error while publishing xxx". It must be a .mac issue.

My problem is not that I cannot update my site as this might be difficult because everybody does it just now. My problem is that my site was entirely deleted from my iDisk when I started the first attempt. So now, do I really need to wait until the traffic flowing to .mac is little enough so that I can update. This can take days and my site will not be there for those days. I mean my site does not contain any important stuff but how would apple feel if their online-shop could not be online for a couple of days.

If the upload would just fail and you could continue at the point where it failed, that would be awesome. But why the **** do I always need to publish everything from the beginning. Any ftp programme can do better.

This is how I got it to work (note that I don’t keep a local copy of my iDisk on my computer-i.e., iDisk sync is turned off in my System Preferences).

1) In iWeb go to FILE > PUBLISH TO A FOLDER and choose a location on your computer. Once the exporting process is complete quit iWeb.

2) Open your iDisk and delete the old iWeb files that have been previously published in the "iWeb" folder (WEB > SITES >IWEB).

3) Copy the files that you exported from iWeb to the same iDisk directory (WEB > SITES >iWEB).

4) Now you have to trick iWeb into believing that it successfully completed the “Publish All to .Mac” operation. First of all, make sure that iWeb is not running. Go to your HOME directory > LIBRARY > APPLICATION SUPPORT > iWEB, and you’ll find a file called “Domain.” [MAKE SURE YOU CREATE A BACK-UP COPY BEFORE PROCEEDING User uploaded file]. Control-click on the file called “Domain” and choose “Show Package content.” Look for a file called “PrePublishState.plist” and delete it.

5) Re-launch iWeb. Your sites will all look all blue—as if iWeb had successfully published them to iDisk. Now you can make changes to your pages, and when you click “Publish,” iWeb will publish only the changes, and it won’t give you other error messages (I tested it by publishing my changes 5 times now, and it hasn’t given me any error yet).

Good luck!

Thanks Alxalx, I'll try that when I get home.

After a number of attempts to publish after that update trying ever trick under the sun, I ended having to roll back to iWeb 1.0.1 and re-publish.

With the update besides all the errors in publishing... when it uploaded most of the pages all the fonts where stuffed and comments and search still did come up.

But I'll try your tip and update again and see if she works.

Hey everybody.

I guess I'm getting in on this one a little late, but I wanted to just let everyone know that I'm having the same problem too.

Ever since I did the update I've trade to publish my site but it always stops due to an error regarding a picture on one of my photo pages (it hasn't been the same page every time).

Interestinly enough, my site does get completed updated everytime. However, iWeb still shows the red icons, indicating that the updated pages have not been published.

I hope Apple figures this one out for us. Thanks.

OK so I've discovered modified files after 3.13

At present the data and packet flow is still much the same.

Prior to failure there was a reasonable pattern to the files being modified, now they are pretty much erratic.

I'm not quite sure how this will help, because even if I reach the end of the uploading process, I suspect that iweb, having detected an error will try to publish the whole site again.

Any how it's late, my eyes won't do much more, so I'm going to leave everything as it is and take a look in the morning.
