open .pdf file in Word & "Convert File" Box appears...Weird.

Using my MacBook Pro, I click on a PDF file to open in Microsoft Word & an angry box appears that says "Convert File."

In the box it says: Convert file from: then it lists various file types i.e., Text only, MS-DOS Text, Rich Text Format, HTML Document, Single File Web Page, Unicode Text and many more.

It is trying to open a PDF file in Microsoft Word.

I can't figure out how to change so it opens!!!

I made the fancy document myself in Microsoft Word and saved it in PDF format on the same computer.

I am a new Mac user....so if you tell me to go somewhere (well, not anywhere..on the computer!); please be specific and help me get there!

I've tried the right click trick, open with trick...no luck. That's not even an option!

It makes a significantly smaller file than Print to PDF does, looks the sam (on screen anyhow)

If I want to shrink this rather large file to zip through the mail; is that possible?

You can create a zip file that can be opened by anyone on a Mac or Windows machine - just select the document under Finder and go to the File menu once again and select "Compress "documentname.pdf" - a zip file will be created that will compress the file somewhat.

Yes....from word.

But, this one happens to be a pdf already from the scan.

So, it's all pdf-ed up.

Wait.

I'm lost.

I went to go find the Finder.

Is that the same thing when I go to OPEN? And I see a list of all the documents?

Or something different?

Something different. Just select the file that you want to compress and you should see the Apple Menu and then Finder and File, etc. at the top of the screen menu. THEN select the Compress "document.pdf" (or whatever you've named the document).

Different is good.

I see compress.

It's gray.

You MUST have the document selected when you go to the Compress submenu. Just make sure that the document is selected the go under the Finder File menu to "Compress "document.pdf"...

Open

Click on my document/it's highlighted.

Command I

Then the box on the side appears.

I see finder.

Next to it is File.

Under file is compress.

Compress is gray.

Even if I go and double click and see the huge pdf in all of it's glory...

up at the top.

I don't see anything worth looking at that's close to compress.

Maybe it's not possible?

You shouldn't have the document open when you try to compress it - just highlight it, as if you were going to do a Get Info (but don't_ and select Compress from the Finder's File menu.

I think Adobe Acrobat Professional will allow you to do this. Not 100% sure though. Even so, its ridiculous someone in this day and age can't open a pdf. Its as good as an industry standard by now. Every computer should have the software to open pdfs, just download it.

Yes! And every Mac normally opens pdfs without problem using the installed Preview app when you double click on the file icon.
