Can't open Messages without getting "An internal Messages error occurred."

Hey,

I have tried to reinstall Mountain Lion 10.8.2 several times to try and get Messages working but with no luck at all, so I thought I would try and get some help here.

This is the error message I'm getting:

User uploaded file

What I've tried to do to fix this is:

Removed all .plist associated with Messages

com.apple.ichat.plist

com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist

com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist

com.apple.ichat.Yahoo.plist

com.apple.ichat.Subnet.plist

com.apple.imagent.plist

com.apple.imessage.bag.plist and

com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist

  • Tried adding Messages to the firewall.
  • Reinstalling Mountain Lion
  • Rebooting my computer
  • Repaired permissions for my SSD that I have Mountain Lion installed on.

This is what I get in Console when trying to launch Messages

Hello.

I never reinstalled yesterday but I just installed the Mountain Lion 10.8.2 combo update (even though I already had 10.8.2 installed)

After that I rebooted and now Messages finally work 😀

Now I have another problem though.

I can only enable my account if I first enable iMessage on my iPhone as soon as I uncheck iMessage on my iPhone I get this error message when I try to enable my account in Messages:

Hi crustyjuggler,

One of the reasons Apple suggests starting your Own thread is that sometimes similar looking symptoms are not the same problem at all.

Samistar is getting a completely different alert message from the app's failure to log in to the iMesages server than you are.

The chances are your Serial Number is Missing.

Go to the Apple Icon Menu and select "About This Mac"

This has a line about the current OS

Click this Line twice (once to Build Number and again to Serial Number).

If it is missing you will need to visit either a Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider and have it replaced.

EDIT

If the Serial Number is presetn then Download and Install the COMBO Version of OS X 10.8.2 if you are updated that far.

Hi,

When you delete and Apple ID from the iPhone it does tend to warn you that "You will be unable to use the Apple Id anywhere" (within iMessages).

However I have not found it removes the Apple ID from the Mac version of Messages.

As Linc has already says it is time you use the Contact Support button.

Basically your Apple ID can be flagged not to be accepted in iMessages and only Apple through that link can sort it out.

Have you looked to see if the Serial Number is present ?

Yep

Build is 12C60 and the serial is present also. It's definately the right username as password as it briefly displays a ticked phone number (my iphone number) and 3 email addresses i have registered under messages for both ios devices. Then it all flashes away and i get that error processing registration box..

I welcome anything else to try..

combi install. check

date time and time zone. check

Correct user login. check

host file in etc/. check

HI crustyjuggler,

In System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab

Add a Public DNS server such as 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 run by Google.

IT seems that sometimes a ISP's DNS server can't seem to "find" the Apple server involved in iMessages.

Worth a shot, but still the same error message.. I did a restart of both the app and the computer (the new DNS has registered) yet still the same outcome. I do appreciate your help on trying to nail this though. It was fine until the original 10.8.2 update. I've even tried an OS install over the top but nothing changed, it's really odd, i wanna try and avoid a fresh install as i can't believe it should come to that.

Anyway, i welcome any other ideas.

All the best

Si

Hi,

Can you create another Mac User Account (System Preferences > User and Groups) if you don't already have one and try the app from there ?
