Can't open Messages without getting "An internal Messages error occurred."

Hey,

I have tried to reinstall Mountain Lion 10.8.2 several times to try and get Messages working but with no luck at all, so I thought I would try and get some help here.

This is the error message I'm getting:

User uploaded file

What I've tried to do to fix this is:

Removed all .plist associated with Messages

com.apple.ichat.plist

com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist

com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist

com.apple.ichat.Yahoo.plist

com.apple.ichat.Subnet.plist

com.apple.imagent.plist

com.apple.imessage.bag.plist and

com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist

  • Tried adding Messages to the firewall.
  • Reinstalling Mountain Lion
  • Rebooting my computer
  • Repaired permissions for my SSD that I have Mountain Lion installed on.

This is what I get in Console when trying to launch Messages

Just set it up and opened messages. I input the same user and password and it showed me the three emails and phone numbers i could tick, i ticked the relevent boxes and then nothing.. after a few seconds it presented me with the same error message.

Oh, i will add that i can open and connect to facetime with no problems. It's just Messages.

Next? 🙂

Hi crustyjuggler,

So you have three emails or three Apple IDs that are emails listed in Messages ? (As potential "Aliases" along with the at least one iPhone Number)

I would try the following:-

Remove any and all Apple IDs from the iOS devices

Put the iOS devices in to Airplane mode.

Try adding the main Apple ID you want to use with Messages on the Mac.

If that gets "accepted" this time then choose one iOS device and set that up next.

Restart Messages as this seems to speed up the server telling you the iOS device "is Using Apple ID and iPhone Number".

If that works repeat for other iOS devices.

I use just the one Apple ID across all 3 devices. I did everything you said, i even removed the emails and switched off messages on the IOS devices, that didn't work so i even went as far as removing the icloud accounts on both devices as well as switching to airplane mode. I restarted the computer and tried to login again but i recieved the same message as before even with no ID's connected with the IOS devices.

Weird huh..

Hi,

So...

Serial Number is present.

Public DNS servers have been added

The Hosts file has been checked.

Date and Time in System Preferences is correct (along with Time Zone)

An Alternative Mac User Account has been tried.

The iPhones have had the Apple ID involved removed

The iPhones have been signed out of the iMessages Server.

Deleted .plists

Did this include com.apple.imservice.iMessages.plist and com.apple.imessage.bag.plist ?

Did you remove any that started com.apple.ichat ?

Are you getting any notification messages in Console ?

Hi,

There is an App in Applications/Utilities called Console.

It is normally set to the Diagnostic and Usage information.

This is essentially a long list of the computer reporting on what it is doing and issues it may be having.

Mostly each line is a "Message" with a reveal triangle.

As these are called Messages, The Messages app can send iMessages, people talking about Mail items tend to refer to them as "messages" as well.

As "everything" seems to be called messages now-a-days I was trying to be more specific that they belonged to the Console App.
