Had this computer for about a month, started noticing that if I use an application for a while (in this case xcode) there will be a screen burn-in of the last window that will fade over time.
Before this iMac I had a 23 inch samsung monitor that NEVER had such problems.
Any ideas? Is this a global problem with these new iMacs, or should I seek replacement.

It's a shame the issue is still there. I ended up getting the fully upgraded 21" iMac and aside from having a mid-range video card it's flawless. No retention issues even when I leave the monitor on without a screensaver and on full brightness for hours. IMO Apple should stop making 27" displays if they can't make them perfect.

Yes, I am aware. I meant stop making 27" iMacs until they can get a more reliable source, like Samsung, to make their displays. If I'm not mistaken, LG is making those at the moment.
I think that's an extremely unrealistic expectation, there is most likely an extremely small percentage of machines affected. Apple will handle those on a case by case basis. To shut down a revenue stream when they have a viable solution would be dumb. If you can come up with some hard statistics that show the percentage of machines affected (which you cannot) then your response would have some credibility.
I don't think it's the display type myself, but Apple's iOSification of OSX. 🙂
Mine is also a BTO 3.4GHz i7/32GB/3TBFusion Drive/GTX 680MX video Card + additional 2 Cinema Displays.
Since I live abroad, it takes months not weeks for my iMac to be repaired or replaced. First I was so upset, because this annoying issue really disturbed my daily work, but I tried to accept the situation and find a way arround it. I changed the default background into PURE WHITE, set the screen and energy saver (to put the display sleep early for longer life-time) and off course regular updates for the CUDA Driver. So far it works for me and I don't find any issue anymore with the display functionality, except learning to forget the fancy background images that I can live without.

I have the same issue. And it's XCode that's burned in. And I've used XCode for a total of maybe 10 hours in the last 3 days. Seriously, hardly at all.
And now, it's burned into my screen.
And I just got this computer a month ago as a replacement for a nearly three year old iMac with a bad display.
*sigh*
You mentioned you bought it a month ago - did you get the refreshed version with the new GeForce 700 series? I am wondering if these have the burn-in issue as well.
Our iMacs screen was replaced by apple. No problems whatsoever anymore.

I created an image, all white (RGB if that matters) and saved it as a JPEG. I displayed it on the monitor for 20 minutes (maxed out to full screen coverage) and it took care of it. In my particular case, the TeamViewer dialogue box was burned into the screen (slightly) - I noticed it upon login (when the gray background shows up with user profiles on it).
The images size was 2560 X 1440 pixels @ 72 dpi.
I got the tip from another thread about this subject - suggested by Apple Support blog.

I've had the same problem (image persistence) on my iMac 27'' (late 2013).
I had to have my display changed through Apple Care a few days ago. The thing took 30 minutes.
Apparently they solved the problem on later models.
If your iMac is still guaranteed I would strongly suggest that you have it serviced (whether you have Apple Care or not). It is not a software problem that you can solve using the white screensaver!
It is a hardware problem.
