Office for Mac 2011 very slow

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion shortly after it came out, Office for Mac 2011 has become a real pain to use. I can use Excel or Word once without a problem, however, after that opening another Office document takes about ten minutes or will not open at all. Closing and reopening Office does not fix it either. I must completely restart my iMac.

I have been thru all the Forum threads I can find and implemented them. These include deleting problem fonts from the Font Book and reinstalling Office. I still have the problem.

All updates are current.

If anyone has other ideas how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate comments.

Thanks.

Reinstall Office.

Use this method (per Microsoft) to remove it and don't omit any parts of the procedure.

I have considered that. But it probably isn’t going to happen. I have been using Excel since the original version came out. I have used it for some very complex stuff, though not so much these days. I never have liked Word though.

I don’t mean to offend you, especially given how helpful you have been. I do appreciate that. But, frankly, I am not real happy with Apple either. Last fall’s Apple recall of my hard drive and the prolonged disaster that ensued trying to get everything running right pretty much has soured me on Apple, especially given their premium prices. (See “Hard drive recall—an ugly experience”)

In spite of their poor reputation, I have an eight-year old HP laptop running XP that has never caused me any problems. The only negative is the extra care required to keep it secure. When it finally has to be replaced I will have to think long and hard about whether I want to go with an Apple product or a Windows machine.

Never heard of Bean. I have downloaded it and will give it a try. Thanks. I have been using Text Edit a lot more due to problems with Office. But Text Edit is too rudimentary.

One reason I have never liked Word is it has too many bells and whistles for the stuff I do. This builds in complexity and sluggishness with, in my case, no compensating benefit.

Excel is the opposite. It has complexity and capabilities that most or all other spreadsheets lack. But in this case I can use the complexity. Excel is the sole reason for my use of Office.

I have never used Outlook except at employers’.

Thanks again.
