Problems Switching from Prepared to Supervised in Apple Configurator

Hi all,

I am at a school managing a cart of iPads. I was using Configurator just to Prepare them and push out a profile and apps. I didn't use Supervise, because I wanted to be able to plug them in to other computers to transfer video. Some update to Configurator came out and I can no longer use Prepare to install paid apps. Frustrating, but okay.

Next I turned on Supervise so I can install paid apps again. Apparently this requires erasing the iPad. Okay, fine. iPads were erased and set to Supervise, but I have no redeem codes left! I can still see that the redeem codes are in Configurator, and are matched up to the iPad serial numbers, but I can't check the box to install them. This is different from the problem of having lost the Configurator information described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5194

Can someone explain how I can use my existing match of serial numbers and redeem codes to install apps?

For updated to IOS7 yes, but in some school systems like ours IOS7 is not approved as some of our vendors don't currently supply IOS7 supported apps. In our case and others like ours cloud based sharing is the ONLY option.

If your apps don't currently support iOS7, I would look at finding new ones. Chances are if they haven't updated the apps by now, they won't be. All new devices come with iOS7 and keeping devices at iOS 6 can be VERY challenging and is some cases impossible. Since you can’t stop users from updating the iOS on the device.

Agreed. Welcome to my life 🙂. Don't want them updated but no way to block it.

We have 15 carts of ipads (30 ipads in each) and each is assigned to their own department (math has 2 carts, science 2 carts, etc) and each have their own speciality apps. Some carts are on IOS7 with updated apps, and some carts are kept to IOS6 because of said vendor issues.

Apple doesn't make it easy as Configurator is limited to what it can do even after being around now for as long as it has and MDM solutions for us don't seem like an option as most from what we have seen give ownership of paid apps to end-users wouldn't be acceptable.

Rather than getting better it seems to be getting worse....now to the point the county has begun looking into other alternatives like chromebook,Surface tablets, android tablets, etc that may be more easily managed.
