This problem defies all logic

I recently installed the most current, updated version of Evernote and noticed that its new Menu Bar Helper wasn't working. I could click and open it, but nothing in it was clickable (voice notes, quick text note, screen capture, gear icon for setttings)...nothing.

So, for step one I booted into Safe Mode and then launched "only" Evernote. This fixed it...the Menu Bar Helper worked just fine. Then I manually launched every app I normally have automatically load at startup...one app at a time, and after each app loaded I checked to see if the Evernote Helper was working. I finished loading all apps and the Evernote Helper was still working.

OK...I figured I'd try that process in reverse, so I did a normal boot, confirmed the Evernote Helper was not working, then one by one, I closed every open app, checking the Evernote Helper after each one. When I was finished closing all the apps the Evernote Helper was still not running.

One of these two processes of elimination should have found the culprit causing the Evernote Helper to not function. I also quit a few processes I knew were associated with apps, even though I'd closed the actual app. If anyone else has a suggestion, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

I've rebooted several times since I uninstalled it. I'll try reinstalling and uninstalling with AppCleaner to see if it goes away.

BTW, since Bartender wasn't the offending app, I reinstalled it. I simply can't live with all the crap on the Menu Bar...and in an order I don't like. It gets rave reviews everywhere and no one has ever reported a problem with it.

I'll post back when I have (hopefully completely removed Cocktail.

Linc, if this ultimately can't be fixed, instead of a complete wipe/reinstall of ML, what about creating a new user, installing all the apps I need that aren't aready installed/available for any user, moving all my files from Documents, Dropbox, etc., then killing the old user (and all files). Finally, I could rename my new user account short name with guidance from: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3872

Apart from your login items and launch agents, there's nothing in your home folder that could possibly be different in safe versus "unsafe" mode. In safe mode, the operating system itself runs with reduced functionality. If there is some way that could affect Evernote in the way you describe, only the developer would know (and even he may not know.)

What I would do in your place is to wipe out the Evernote configuration completely. Again, only the developer can tell you how to do that. Test it with the default settings, then make changes cautiously to avoid recreating the problem. That's all I can do to help you with software I've never used. I only vaguely know what it is.

Obtaining support for Evernote is worse than from Google...it's just not going to happen.n Their idiotic advice is to simply drag Evernote to the trash...and even the app deletion apps you don't like find six or seven files for Evernote. While the home folder may not contain anything different between safe and normal, I wonder why the home folder works fine when it's a new home folder for a new user? That sort of counters the theory that it's the same both ways.

In any event, thanks for your help. I'm either going to build a new user folder, then rename the old one immediately so I can rename the new one with my old user name before populating it....or just rebuild the system completely. The latter is easy to do...but getting everything configured correctly takes several days. Thanks again, Linc.

I just tried to download Evernote, it started asking me to check my internet connection, over and over. I decided this was not a good application for, started trying to remove it, took a while, it's in the trash, won't empty for some of the same reasons mentioned in prior posts, some aspect is being used. Can't find them on the computer to delete, and the icon is still in the tool bar.

Any help for people who are not develper types? Simple steps. I did find things in the Library to remove, still can't empty trash.
