Iphone 5 will not charge after water damage. Tried various solutions.

Hi all,

A few weeks ago i put my iphone 5 in the washing machine for about 30 seconds. I got it out ASAP but it was still noticably wet. I quickly padded it down and put it in a bag of rice for several days (luckily it was already out of battery when it went in).

After i had left it to dry out i plugged it in only to find the lightining cabel symbol comes up and it will not charge. So what i have done so far;

  • Changed battery- new battery still will not charge. However, when i did put a new battery in that held some charge the phone did turn on and everything was working fine.
  • Tried new lightning cable
  • Changed dock connector- still would not charge
  • Removed battery and cleaned entire phone with 99% isopropyl, dried and phone still would not charge.

I'm pretty lost here??? If everything was working fine when i put the new battery in apart from being able to charge i asssumed it must be the dock connector but apparently not.

I have heard it might be something to do with the USB/Power IC on the motherboard?? But im not sure if these can be replaced. I would just like to try everything myself before taking to apple as i know they will charge me a small fortune for out of warrenty repair.

I would bet it is probably the charging circuit in the phone too.

Any Part can be replaced - but can it be replaced by the phone owner is the question?

1st you would need a new part. Even if you could identify the part, it is likely a specialized Apple part - if not special in design it may be a standard off the shelf with a special Apple part number. Companies often have parts marked with an internal part number. If it is a special design you will be out of luck getting a new part. If you can idendify the part as an off the shelf part then obtaining one would be the next hurdle. You could always try ebay or somewhere to buy a broken phone cheap just for parts. You will need the Exact same phone, model and revision, and with the same revision circuit board to be sure of part compatibility.

Finally you would need the skill and a microscope and specialized solder removal and soldering equipment to deal with a small outline surface mount part.

There is indeed documentation that says that you just refuse to accept it. After all of the work that was done on that phone there is no Apple Store that will work on it. And I just replaced a screen on an iPhone 4s that was from a 3rd party repair shop, she took it first to an Apple Store (Southlake, TX) that turned her away saying they would not work on it since it had a 3rd party screen on it.

P.S. You are also answering a post from 2 years ago. They may not be listening.
