iMessage not syncing between Mac and iPhone

If I send an iMessage from my iPhone, it will send it no problem. When the other iPhone user responds, it will send their response to my iPhone and Messages app on my MacBook Pro, as it should, but if someone iMessages me without me making first contact, then my iPhone will not receive it, but my Message app will. All account info (Apple ID, password, etc.) between the two apps is correct. I'm running OSX Mountian Lion 10.8.3 on my MacBook Pro and I have an iPhone 4S running iOS 6.1.3. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Vinny,

Can you confirm that on the iPhone you can "Send " to the Apple ID when you have the iPhone set to Start conversations From the iPhone Number ?

In this particular case you should see a "Send" and a "Receive" version as the Sync with the Apple ID should cause this.

Also does the iPad see the iMessage ?

If you use the Contact item top right of the Conversation you should see the ID (or iPhone number) that is in use indicated by it being blue when looking at the Address Card.

Next on the iPad disable the iPhone Number so it will only get Apple ID iMessages.

On the Mac version do the same.

On the iPhone set it to "Send" from the iPhone Number and iMessage the Apple ID.

This should exclude th Sync Process confusing what is working or not.

Which Devices does it show up on ?

On the Mac version whilst the iPhone number is still deselected (as a Sync option)will it send any iMessages to your iPhone Number ?

From what I understand this is not happening even when the app looks logged in.

If this is the case shut down Messages and open Finder Window.

Use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Preferences into the dialogue box.

Once in the Preferences folder find the following:-

com.apple.imessage.bag.plist

com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist

Drag these both to the Trash.

Restart Messages.

The first of these holds the Server info, the second holds the the Apple ID and any "Aliases" set up with the account (which should include the iPhone Number)

Messages will probably need resetting with the Apple ID.

Before doing anything else on any device test whether you can send to the iPhone Number.

If this works then turn On the Apple ID option on the iPhone.

Restart the Mac version and you should get the Pop ups saying what the iPhone is using.

Accept these and the iPhone number should be added to the iMessages info.

Re-add the Apple ID to the iPad. At some point this should also generate Pop ups on the Mac and the iPhone to confirm what the iPad is using.

Gonna try all you said again but 1st time thru here's what I uncovered...

Using email addy as text shows on both phone & iPad....if I just use ph# to text to, it goes to EMAIL contact on phone. So it goes to myself but doesn't pop up in same conversation. NOT TO iPad or MBP

IF I text to contact/email it goes to iPhone & iPad, again nothing to MBP

hi,

It seems you are saying that in fact that the iPhone Number is somehow "de-registered" or Off line and the devices are getting the Messages via th Sync process to the Apple ID.

From this I take it you never got as far as excluding the iPhone Number to check specific connections ?

Try this very precisely:-

On the iPhone, Settings > Messages remove the Apple ID.

Does the iPhone number appear with a tick next to it ? (it should be Greyed Out).

I have had an occasion where the iPhone Number was listed and Greyed Out but Not ticked (which you cannot do Manually).

The iPhone only gets Messages sent directly to the Apple ID or those that Sync to the Apple ID.

The Fix is to turn Off Messages on the iPhone.

As Double check to break with the server also place the iPhone in Airplane mode.

Wait a few Minutes then take out of Airplane mode and check the Messages settings.

Enable Messages and wait until the iPhone Number is confirmed as Connected to the Server. (it will show the Verifying/spinning thing)

Once this is done make sure the Mac is set not "Receive At" the iPhone Number in the iMessages account settings (so it responding only to the Apple ID ).

Send an iMessages from the iPhone to the Apple ID (At the Moment the iPhone can only send from the iPhone Number)

Double check by sending a reply (Apple ID on Mac to iPhone Number on iPhone)

If this is working Add back the Apple ID on the iPhone.

Restart the App on the Mac (It gets to the Pop ups quicker than waiting)

The Pop ups should appear telling you the iPhone is using BOTH the Apple ID and it's iPhone Number.

PROBLEM SOLVED on my end by Completely Resetting Messages & Apple ID on my iPhone

1. On iPhone, closed the Messages app

2. Signed out of Apple ID (Settings>Messages>Send&Receive > Tapped Apple ID, Signed out)

3. Turned off iMessage using toggle switch (Settings>Messages)

Then the reverse...

4. Turned back on iMessage using toggle switch

5. Signed back in Apple ID

and all messages from that point on started flowing through in perfect sync between my iMac, iPad and iPhone.

Thanks for all your help folks - seems like the simple full reset does the trick if everything else is set up correctly.

Thank you. Perfect, detailed enough, yet concise explanation. It worked!

Back trying to FIX. Still no success. Went thru last few posts to do as stated & ZERO success. Got this msg from MBP when trying to sign in w/ same user/pass for iPhone that worked: Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again.

I don't get that msg when I use other apple ID sign on...when I use other, I can get to point of everything looking perfect but TESTS using MBP iMessage gets me no texts going anywhere or able to receive...I've tried everything. I even updated iPhone to latest IOS updates...

My iPhone & iPad worked together perfectly w/ iMessage...it's the MBP that no longer works/imessage.

ANYONE?

Also got this on MBP in iMessage when trying to sign in & asked to IGNORE OR DISABLE SCRIPT

I am sure I am going to get flamed here, but I have realized that trying to use messaging, ie. iMessage, on a computer is a lost cause. I have decided NOT to even try to look at iMessage running on my laptop with Mavericks. This is what I have encountered while conversing via text messages with another iPhone user.

1) iMessage replies that I send on my phone end up being listed in iMessage BEFORE the iMessage I am replying to.

2) 6 of the next 6 iMessage exchanges from the same iPhone user to/from my iPhone, do NOT show up in iMessage on my laptop. Then, all of a sudden the next two (2) do show up.

TOTALLY unreliable!! I have realized that the best approach is to ignore iMessage on my computers and only reply/send iMessages on my iphone. I am OK with that as I am a realist. BUT I am SO tired of Apple telling us about how everything is fine and it is user error. NO...IT IS NOT! Nothing has changed between when it works and when it doesn't. Apple software has become totally urneliable. I am really ****** because I am a long time Apple supporter who is also heavily invested financially in Apple. I no longer have confidence in their ability to deliver.

If anyone thinks I am being overly pessimistic, perhaps you have not also experienced the wonderful feature of the most recent iOS where an email cannot be deleted unless it is at the top of the email inbox list. I am just becoming more and more angry about what the current administration is doing to the company. The exact thing that Apple was always lauded for - reliability - is out the **** window!!!

Hi,

I am catching up on email alerts that have arrived whilst I have been away for a few days.

This does not make any sense:-

The first item is obviously "Event" which is set to "When I log out" which cannot be done in Messages (it is possible in iChat so it may be reading a .plist that is holding that info)

It is a Script that will Auto Accept any incoming invite (Text, Video or Audio Only). Having said that it can only be set in Messages to "Message Received" for Text Chat.

The Script is is looking at also is not the "right " one.
It should look in ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.apple.ichat (or as yours says /Users/paulschuler/Library/Application Scripts/com.apple.iChat/Auto Accept.applescript)

I am not sure why this is in your case.

DO you have the said Adobe ones in the Hard Drive/Library/ScriptingAdditions as it says ?

Hi,

I have had two occasions when things didn't work properly for me. One involved my own iPhone and the other involved sending or at least trying to send iMessages to my wife's iPhone.

I could send from my iPhone to my wife but not from my Mac.

Investigations showed she was only getting SMS messages from me.

Further checks showed that on her iPhone the iMessages bit was Off leaving SMS only.

The Mac version cannot send SMS so I could send from my Mac.

It is not known how the setting was changed as my wife is unlikely to change settings and only uses her iPhone.

The issue with my iPhone is the one that lead to the info I have posted before about resetting the iPhone.

Again I realised that something was odd about what sort of iMessages (or not) were coming and arriving on my iPhone.

I could iMessages my iPhone but it was showing Sync version of the Apple ID when I was iMessaging the iPhone Number.

On Checking I found that somehow the iPhone Number was "de-registered" leaving only the Apple ID logged in on the iPhone.

As this is a greyed out setting you cannot change it remains a mystery.

However the process of removing the Apple ID for the iMessages settings on the iPhone, then placing it in Airplane Mode and then checking the iPhone Number "Registers" on restarting the Messages app on the iPhone was the way to go.

Then you can add back the Apple ID.

I have suggested in some threads that before the Apple ID is added back that people check the iPhone can send iMessages from the iPhone Number to the Mac (Apple ID).
