What are your favorite backup apps?

I am looking for a simple to use backup app. I have never used a backup app with windows or Mac's before so just looking for something simple and effective. I have looked around and saw that Intego had one backup program but they mostly have security apps. So I did not know if it was worth it. Thanks for the feedback in advance! Oh, just so you know I do not have a external harddrive right now and was wondering how safe it really is using programs that upload to the net.

Hi Hex50,

"One of the issue's I have seen is that some of the
HD's are not compatible with the MBP Intel chip"

Can you direct me to this info? I'm going to get a
new HD for my MacBook.

Thanks

Clint

Well that's what I am looking for actually. A HD that is compatible with the MBP Intel Chip. Does anyone have any ideas???

If you purchase an external HD for backup you will want it to be a Firewire or Combo (both USB & FW) since you can only boot up from a FW port. The drive will likely have Retrospect Express backup software bundled with it. This is a good backup program and will do incremental backups. SuperDuper will do incremental backups but not with the free version.

I've settled on LaCie external drives so I don't have any personal experience with Maxtors but they, along with LaCie and Western Digital are often recommended here. Try typing Maxtor in the search box on the main discussions page and you should get lots of results. Try the same in the iMac G4 forum. There are people there who use Maxtors.

I think you'll be very happy with your new Maxtor. Remember to partition it with Disk Utility. Next, you will have to decide on which backup software to use. As with the external drives, there are a number of good choices! I've recently become a SuperDuper! convert.

There are downsides to R' Express.

1] Unless you prepartition the FWHD, it will take over the whole thing. (I have a lot of mine unused because the Internal HD is smaller the the FWHD.

2] R' Express does not leave you with a bootable system. You will have to startup from a Bootable CD/DVD and replace whatever is corrupt. You can select as little or much as you want.

OT a bit. My Internal HD is partitioned with the OS Part too small thanks to a local Mac guru, that's a sarcastic small "g." When I get rountoit I'm going to redo the wholething w the Internal Non Partitioned. Make sure all is joy. Then either stop using R' Express or Partition the FWHD.

Maybe more than you wanted to know. One person's experience. JP
