Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I'm attempting to load Win7 on MBPr with Bootcamp 5.0 and am getting the error "Your disk could not be partitioned. An error occurred while partitioning disk." No other information leads me to understand the problem. Does anyone know anything about this error and how to fix?
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 15-Inch, 2.53Ghz, Mid 2009.
This is very helpful, but use "reboot" instead of "exit". After running fsck I used "exit" but the fix was not saved. "reboot" solves the problem.
The second method worked for me.

You are correct . . . BootCamp assistant should be creating the partition. Then, when you run Windows installation, the partition then requires a format. There is NO outside driver required.
Please start a new discussion in Bootcamp. You have a different issue.

diskutil list
diskutil cs list
in the new discussion.

macOS cannot shrink the APFS container. Have you tried thinning the local snapshots? See tmutil for reference.
Can you manually create a FAT partition using Disk Utility?
