Cannot send emails with my iCloud email address in Outlook for Mac 2011 and get error message 5.7.8

Thanks so much Go Go Delicious. Your fix worked for me on Outlook 2011 on OS X Lion. I have used my previous password and can send email from me.com now. You're a star! 🙂 I didn't have to fiddle with any encryption settings. Very happy now.

How did you find this out and do we know when Apple will fix it, as presumably when the fix it, Outlook will stop again until the new password is entered.

When my password was being rejected, it was being rejected from Apples servers. So I thought for a second and said "If my password is incorrect for smtp BUT is working for incoming mail, then I wonder if it wants my old password". So I made the changes described in my post above and Prest'O Change'O it worked.

Hmmmm. Wondering if this is part of forcing us to use @icloud.com instead of @me.com or @mac.com?

I did not have a password change, but still can't send.

I didn't receive a password reset, but as Outlook was complaining about the password/authentication failure, I went to apple's password reset page https://iforgot.apple.com/iForgot/iForgot.html and asked for a reset. I went through the reset loop but had to set a new different password. Go Go Delicious pointed out that my original password may then work in Outlook me.com SMTP mail and I found that using my original password THEN allowed me to send mail. I have no idea why this bizarre work around should work, but it fixed it for me.

I had a similar problem with Postbox 3 on OSX.

This worked for me:

Server: smtp.mail.me.com

Port: 587

Connection Security: STARTTLS (not SSL/TLS)

Authentication: Password

Username: xxxx.xxxx@me.com (I used @mac and @icloud and got error msgs, not with @me.com)

Old password work for me.....funny, mac mail works fine with the new password but outlook doesnt????

i just ran into this problem and found this thread trying to resolve it.

These servers may have been correct at one time but are not now (Apple seems to shuffle things around). as of 09/25/2013, these bad settings are documented here.

in summary, the settings should be this--

email ID: firstlast@domain

read type: IMAP

server: mail.me.com

account ID: firstlast

password: password

SSL: Y

port: 993

password: see read

I have confirmed these work for Entourage 2008, Outlook 2011, Apple Mail, all on OSX 10.8.5.

NOTE: it talkes a little trickery to set up an iCloud account as IMAP in Apple Mail. Apple Mail tries to set it up as iCloud which behaves differently than IMAP.

Called Apple support and verified that my password was valid and that my Apple mail client works fine. Tried resetting my password. Tried using my old password after the reset. Tried the various server settings to no avail. mjbolzan1's post led me to the solution:

I must to use my account name and not the fully qualified email address for the server settings to work. (i.e. use 'username' instead of 'username@me.com'.

If anyone is still having problems, I've found a solution.

Use: p06-smtp.mail.me.com for outgoing server, full email address as user name.

I'm using Outlook 2011 for Mac, with a @me.com email address, on Mountain Lion.

This solved the problem for me. Was using "username@me.com" as the account name and when I changed it to just "username" the inability to send was fixed. Why this problem cropped up all of a sudden is a mystery!

Nothing else worked but using "p06-smtp.mail.me.com" did . . . THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! 🙂

So many Thanks!!!!! I have been round the houses for the past two hours trying to fix this problem. But this (p06-smtp.mail.me.com) worked straight away. But why has the outgoing server address suddenly changed ??? Bonkers.
