Cannot send emails with my iCloud email address in Outlook for Mac 2011 and get error message 5.7.8

I cannot send emails with my iCloud email address in Outlook for Mac 2011 and get error message 5.7.8. I have used this iClound email address for months without a problem and for the last 5 days it will not work. I have tried all of the mail settings suggested my the support posts. Does anyone have another solution?

Thanks guys, just had same issues today, could send on iPad & iPhone but not thru Outlook on my Macbook. Reset the smtp settings as discussed but still issues. Had to take the "@me.com" off the username and that sorted it, as in this link

Yes, that is the correct method, your login is your username, not your complete email address.

i had the same error 0x80004005. what fixed it for me was to change smtp server from smtp-mail.me.com or smtp.me.com both didn't work to p06-smtp.mail.me.com

smtp-mail.me.com is simply an incorrect server, smtp.me.com is th now defunct Mobile Me server, that's why those 2 did not work.

smtp.mail.me.com is the correct server, with or without the p06 (or any other number)

These are the correct server settings as published by Apple:

Server information

IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:

  • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
  • SSL Required: Yes
  • Port: 993
  • Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
  • Password: Your iCloud password

SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:

  • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
  • SSL Required: Yes
  • Port: 587
  • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
  • Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
  • Password: Your iCloud password

Note: If you receive errors using SSL, try using TLS instead. SSL is required for both IMAP and SMTP connection with iCloud. POP is not supported by iCloud.

Had this same issue my MobileMe mail just stopped being able to connect to the outgoing server to send mail just the other day. Had been working fine previously no recent software updates to change anything. Just stopped working yesterday. Today saw the post about changing smtp server from smtp.mail.me.com to p06-smtp.mail.me.com and low and behold I can send email again.😁

Very weird indeed - I had all the standard settings and ports etc, have been sending and receiving emails for more than 2 years and today it all stopped. I couldn't send any emails and was receiving the 5.7.8 bad username message. After reading these posts I changed the outgoing server to p06-smtp.mail.me.com and, like dadadoofus, it worked immediately. Why would anyone change an eamil server and not inform people. The mind boggles.

Suddenly found unable to send e-mails and they were stacked up in outbox with error code 5.7.8 poping up!

After almost 5 hourse talking to MS & Apple, MS Support pointed me to this 'thread'. I took 'jren49's' advice and changed server to p06-smtp.mail.me.com, full e-mail address and username.

Fuly operational agian and have confirmed with iCloud support this outgoing server setting has no implications for iCloud sync and that this is a known workaround for the problem.

(Using Outlook 2011 for Mac, with a @me.com e-mail address on Mountain Lion)

Anyone that has a working Apple Mail client, go to Mail->Preferences and look at account information for incoming mail. In my setup, my User Name is 'myname' and not 'myname@me.com'. This is configured for you automatically by the Mail client, since you enter you email address and password when the program first starts up. I think this implies that the servers, at least some of them, could be expecting this format. Regardless of the server you are using, I would recommend removing the @me.com from your account name for incoming and outgoing mail on all clients.
