IPhone 4S volume control not working!

My iPhone 4S appears to be stuck in "dock connector" mode. The volume control buttons on the side of the phone are not working so my phone will not ring & I receive no alerts. "Bluetooth" & "dock connector" are the only outputs available when playing music. "Speaker" is not an option.

Thank you for any assistance you can give me. BTW...the "mute" is NOT enabled.

**this has been an ongoing issue for me but happened again after the latest update (3.23.13). Ordinarily I can clean the pin connector on the phone & it fixes the issue. It is not working this time.

Cleaning the dock connector did not work. It only made problem worse. Now, when I'm plugged with headphones the "iPod" shuts down the volume and I have to yank the connector to get it working. But it only works for 5 seconds!

Weird thing is that 'Voice memos' work perfectly when listening them with phones own speaker. But music nor Youtube don't work! To me sounds like in-built software problem :/

Thanks, bc i was definitely having the same problem (my phone got soaked by a twelve foot wave crashing unto the beach) and i thought my life was over. my speakers would only work with my headphones plugged in and my volume controls weren't working at all. Tried the voice memo thing, absolute life saver!!! Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! ☺️

I've been having this problem as well. No volume, nor volume change recognition in Videos, Music, Ipod, Pandora, FB, Instagram, Youtube, ect.. However, voice memos - yes, choosing ringtones while in settings - yes, even the Alarm plays the song it's set to. Cannot understand why it only works in certain places.

But wait! There's more!

I've been having battery issues and more than a handful of screen freeze issues since the last update. Yesterday was when the volume went away. I was walking listening to my ipod when it kept cutting out. I'd reopen Music, hit play, then it would disappear in 30 sec, give or take. Till it abruptly quit all-together. I tried powering down, and it wouldn't. It kept repowering itself back up. Even with a hard (home key and upper key held) shut down. Finally I forced the battery to die so it would shut down. No longer having issues with the powering down/back up... thankfully.

Here's what else I've tried.. The memo trick. Cleaning the dock. Cleaning the 3 tiny mesh screens. Cleaning the Headphone Jack (it was plugged in when the issue started.) I've also, tried restoring back to factory settings.

I don't have the money to replace the dock port (assuming that would cost anything.. though I have no idea how one would go about doing that.

Can anyone help me pretty, pretty please?

Geez I can't understand why people don't read my post.
I'm an experienced iDevices repairman. I've seen at least 50 people coming to me with this problem, and every single time I was able to help them by placing a new charging port. Cleaning the old one helps in a very small number of cases.

SO JUST REPLACE THE CHARGING PORT!!!

I charge €25 for the connector incl installation. I'm sure you can find someone near who can do it for about the same price. The part itself costs like 15 dollars. You had the money to buy a 500 dollar phone so 15 dollars isn't that much...

Similar issue here. Started with the update to iOS 7.0.4. Phone will no longer power off - power button & slide, just restarts. Also, when you unlock your phone, you should be able to adjust the volume with the side buttons. All I get is a grey Ringer window with no volume bar, although the volume controls work. Key tones (clicks) no longer function within apps but volume for notifications and applications are fine.

1. Tried powering off - just keeps restarting.

2. Tried resetting (power button and home buttons for 10s), sometimes works, sometimes not.

3. Cleaned charge port, still no effect.

4. Tried a complete erase and setup as new iPhone, no change.

5. Tried the voice memo but volume controls work within all apps so that's not an issue.

I've not tried letting the battery run out but I'm wondering HappyFunJenn if you did this and it worked? Your post is a little confusing as you mention you let the battery die and that fixed all issues or just the power off issue?

Thanks,

The same thing is happening to me? It works fine with voice memos, or plugging in headphones (but not a bluetooth Bose speaker), and calling someone. I read a simliar post in which the problem was the headphone jack and someone suggested putting their mouth on the headphone jack and sucking really hard on it. I know, I know, it soudns ridiculous but many people said it worked. I did it on the charger input and it worked for a couple of seconds?

I've been trying cleaning it, blowing, sucking, going on speaker, using the accessibility thing, nothing has worked permanently so far... Any other ideas?

People don't seem to read my post

if cleaning the dock connector:charging port doesn't work

REPLACE THE **** CHARGING PORT!!!!

Due to a shortcut on two of the docking pins, your iPhone thinks it's in a docking station speaker and so it is sending the music and such to the docking port in order to play it on the docking station speakers. But there isn't one, it's just your iPhone thinking there is one. That's also the reason you can't adjust the volume, because the docking station is supposed to do that. It's really this, believe me. So you can buy a charging port on eBay for 15$ and do it yourself with a video from youtube or bring it to a repairman, normal price would be something around 35$ i guess.
