IPhone 4S volume control not working!

My iPhone 4S appears to be stuck in "dock connector" mode. The volume control buttons on the side of the phone are not working so my phone will not ring & I receive no alerts. "Bluetooth" & "dock connector" are the only outputs available when playing music. "Speaker" is not an option.

Thank you for any assistance you can give me. BTW...the "mute" is NOT enabled.

**this has been an ongoing issue for me but happened again after the latest update (3.23.13). Ordinarily I can clean the pin connector on the phone & it fixes the issue. It is not working this time.

First of all I'd like to say "Hi" to the forum. ( Newbie ) . I have an IP-4S running OS7 that has the issue of no sound at times, well, most of the time through the loud speaker. ( Except for ringtone Only ) , it was driving me crazy as to why

when I went into settings checked everything that could be at fault causing the no audio problem, and everything was set to where it is suppose to be, when I went into sounds, the only setting that would play a sound through loud speaker was ringtones selection, No audio at all from all of the rest: text tone, new voice mail, new mail, etc.. no lock sound, no keyboard sounds, no music / audio playback. ( Except through headphones inserted, all could be heard ) , I first thought about the headphone jack, ( contacts within jack being stuck open ) gave it a good cleaning with an alcohol soaked soft bristle pipe cleaner, blew out with canned air, cleaned some more, that process got some dirt out of the jack, but did not fix my problem, I then got out my USB lighted microscope and checked the docking port connector to check if any of the contact / pins were shorted or missing, pins were fine just dirty, gave all of that a good cleaning, process as mentioned above. Went back into sounds / music, still nothing from loud speaker, getting very frustrated, I put the phone down on my desk for a while, came back few minutes later to fool with it some more and what do you think, the sounds and music would play normally through the loud speaker, so freakin odd. So I kept some music playing, went through all of the settings double checking everything, everything was still where it was. I played around with apps and menu avenues for a while, while listening to music, then thought I would pause the music, put the IP-4S in lock mode ( got the lock sound when I locked it ), opened device right back up, and guess what, No Freakin Sound Again. Long story short, the issue with My device is a Thermal Issue, I don't know where or how or why, but it is. ( Before it's said, I've checked all 10 of the connectors attached to the logic board, all are fitting securely ) so, there is not a problem with a loose connection, ruling that out. I have come to realize that when I am holding the device in my hand it gets warm, very warm, and when I lay it down a while, it cools off and heals itself. Here's a kicker for you, if this issue wasn't odd enough already, When I do get the audio to function properly, that is coming through the loud speaker, I can keep the music playing, do anything I want to do, put on charge ( device gets very warm, almost hot ) take off charge, lock device, sleep device, reboot device, hold in hand for as long as I want ( builds up heat ) go in web sites, apps, itunes, download stuff, whatever I want device to do and the music still plays through the loudspeaker. Seems like when the device got hot enough to cause the problem it would kill the audio at that point in time, but No, it just keeps on playing, Only if I pause the music and let device go to sleep or lock it or reboot it, there will be No Audio when the Home page back comes up, until I let the device cool off completely. I've been going through this process for a week now, and it is the only thing that solves my problem with No Audio, what a pain in the A~ ~ . Note: Have had IP-4S for a week now, was gave to me along with issues it has. Other issue is that, Device Will Not Stay Powered Off, ( just restarts ), Unless it is Being Charged, will discuss that in another forum, I have a fix for that.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but wanted to get as much detail as possible without writing a book.

Hope this helps someone in search of info for the same problem I am having, you are not alone

My iphone 4S had the same problem as everyone else here. I tried all the above suggestions with the exception of replacing the docking port, as suggested by iMechano. I cleaned the heck out of the phone's docking port; a lot of lint came out -- but that didn't fix the issue

However, iMechano mentioned in one of his/her post that the iphone thinks it's in a docking station, which kinda explains the phone's symptoms. I have 4 different charging cords, 2 old ones and 2 good ones. I usually use the 2 old ones to charge my phones. Anyway, I used one of my good cords and started to plug/unplug the phone to see if I can trick the iphone to "disengage" from the docking station (I don't have any docking stations btw). It only took a couple of tries but it worked! My phone is working properly again. Hope it stays that way.

YESSSS!!!!! thank you!!! I was having a bath and it over flowed and my phone was sitting on the side I picked it up and my hands were wet so it went into the dock port. I tried cleaning it and that didn't work so I did the memo technique and it worked!!!🙂 only for a short time though before it just stops playing the song and does the same thing again.. but luckily my phone is all in working order. Is there anyway i can prevent this from happening completely? but thank you fabulous help!!!

Thank you so much, Asaing--

After updating my phone, I'd been without volume control on my 4S for weeks. Today I spent the entire morning trying everything--changing the settings, reinstalling the iOS, restoring from backup, etc. to no avail. Recording a voice memo solved the problem!!! It took less than a minute. Awesome, I hope it lasts, thanks again!

I was having a similar problem. My phone would ring fine, and the voice memos played fine, but I could not listen to music or other alerts like incoming or outgoing mail, etc. When I would touch the volume buttons the ringer bell icon would appear but the volume controls would not work. With the headphones, everything worked fine though.

Tried following some suggestions here like restarting phone by pressing the home button together with the top button and turning phone on and off to no avail.

What worked for me was reseting my phone which I believe was mentioned but I did not know how:

Simply go to Settings, General, scroll all the way down to Reset and press Reset All Settings.

That worked for me last night and alll my sounds are now working fine. Hope it lasts.

Resetting will erase any apps only some of your preferences which you can set up again.

Hope this helps!
