IPhone 4S volume control not working!

My iPhone 4S appears to be stuck in "dock connector" mode. The volume control buttons on the side of the phone are not working so my phone will not ring & I receive no alerts. "Bluetooth" & "dock connector" are the only outputs available when playing music. "Speaker" is not an option.

Thank you for any assistance you can give me. BTW...the "mute" is NOT enabled.

**this has been an ongoing issue for me but happened again after the latest update (3.23.13). Ordinarily I can clean the pin connector on the phone & it fixes the issue. It is not working this time.

Since I went on holiday and used an ipod dock I have started getting these problems. I thought that cleaning it would help - which it did for a couple of hours. I tried all of the suggestions on the internet and thought that my only solution was to get my iphone 4s charging port replaced. Got it changed today thinking that it must be the port that is the problem. It has been fine most of the day and literally late tonight it has gone back to the same problem. No volume bar! Speakers are working fine - it just doesn't let the sound play from my music.

Since so many people are having this problem - it has to be something to do with software/updates. My phone is 2 years old but there are plenty of people with new phones with the same issue! Im thinking about going to the genuis bar and asking for more advice. I'm not in the position to buy a brand new phone - especially when my phone has been well looked after and had no problems before. 😟

Apple need to realise so many people are having the same issue!!!!

Recommend that before any mechanical measures are tried you all try shutting down all apps that may be running in the background. Double click the home button to see what's active, slide them all off to the side with a touch-and-drag, and try our audio settings again with any app that uses audio control. I found that some apps bogart the audio controls and will block you from using them with your hardware controls even, until you positively shut them down as above. Be aware that just putting the phone to sleep with the "off" button does not turn off apps, nor does one touch of the home button to switch to the home screen.

Hi

Thanks for the tips!

After reading this thread, I tried putting sticky-tape around a blunt knife blade and wiggled that in the USB/charging port. A significant ball of fluff came out, and the volume works again 🙂

I thought my volume had gone due to the headphone jack. After dropping the phone in water, I'd previously sorted the sound out using a cotton-bud down the headphone jack, but that wasn't working this time.

If that hadn't have worked, I guess I'd have replaced the charging dock as suggested.

Cheers
