IPhone 4S volume control not working!

My iPhone 4S appears to be stuck in "dock connector" mode. The volume control buttons on the side of the phone are not working so my phone will not ring & I receive no alerts. "Bluetooth" & "dock connector" are the only outputs available when playing music. "Speaker" is not an option.

Thank you for any assistance you can give me. BTW...the "mute" is NOT enabled.

**this has been an ongoing issue for me but happened again after the latest update (3.23.13). Ordinarily I can clean the pin connector on the phone & it fixes the issue. It is not working this time.

I have just found the solution!!!

Okay, my iphone had an issue with the volume control for ringer and sound where the phone speaker was actually fully functional, but when I tried to use the volume buttons, it would come up with the "Ringer" box, but where the volume turning up should be, it was just a grey box 😟

So I looked over many forums like this and saw the swaps, and the butter knife solutions, and even the ones where people are trying to sell you something. None of them worked, and I wanted to make sure that there wasnt a solution before spending lots on money.

But I found the solution:

1. Lock your iphone

2. Assuming that you have music on your iphone, press play (if yu werent already listening to a song, your iphone chooses one automatically)

3. The song will start to play (make sure the phone isn't on silent) and you will be able to control the volume with your finger on the slider.

4. Now try using the buttons to turn up volume up and down. Pause the song and use the buttons. The volume should still move up and down at will.

5. That just basically fixed your problem, you can now turn the volume up and down without sound necessarily having to be played.

NOW UNLOCK YOUR PHONE! Check its on ringer and turn up the volume. The sound and ringer should now be working. It worked for me!

Its kind of strange how not many other people/ no one else thought of this before, especially "phone technicians".

Tell me if it worked - it could always have been a one-off

immy2xx--

What an aggravation this is. How is it possible so many people have the same issue? I've been using the butter knife trick over and over again, unfortunately with no lasting results. I'm worried about doing permanent damage to the connectors.

This solution definitely worked for me and so far it is still fixed.

Thanks so much!!!!

In response to my last post, people have found that the volume slider doesn't even show on the lock screen. There is a simple solution to this,

grab a hair dryer.

1. Put the hair dryer on the lowest setting

2. Hold it around 10cm from the charging port for only three seconds

3. Repeat step 2, but to the earphone port for 3 seconds

4. Stop hairdrying, unlock your phone and waalaa!!

Your phone will be fixed.

I have a feeling that this fault has something to do with the phones heat give off, but there are still a lot of questions to be answered by Apple.

I hope the problem is resolved without this aggravation in the new update ~ enjoy

None of this works buddy. The volume slider doesn't show up, the volume buttons are unresponsive, and blowing out the ports is futile.

I'm sick and tired of Apple's subpar quality control. Three members of our family had a great 3 year run with the 3GS. We upgrade to 2 iphone 5's and 1 iphone 4s and it's been nothing but trouble. The two 5's had developed defective power buttons and the 4s was replaced once for a nonresponsive screen while under warranty. Now its replacement has this issue.

That's 4 failures out of four phones!!!

We are seriously considering switching to Samsung come our next upgrade. It's rather embarassing for Apple to be producing such garbage with such a high failure rate.

Okay folks, so after ranting about Apple on my previous post, which I will not remove for I still feel Apple's been slowly dropping the ball...

----------------------------I'VE FIXED THE ISSUE---------------------------

Yes it certainly is the docking port, and unless it is defective or damaged, a good cleaning with alcohol will solve your issue, BUT, what needs to be wiped with alcohol is not the white horizontal strip with the contacts. I tried this with no results and moved on to further inspect the port.

What needs cleaning are the two square, metal contacts that sit flush against the upper wall of the port. In other words, on the cavity wall that runs underneath the home button.

There are two square contacts on this wall just above the outer edges of the white plastic strip. The space between is very narrow and requires a very thin tool such as a tiny/thin flathead screwdriver, tip of a steak knife, or an exacto blade with a snapped tip, covered in an alcohol wipe or an alcohol soaked pec pad.

Wiping these two contacts down will leave a dark grey residue on the pad. This is metallic residue from your charging cable.

You can see similar residue when striking bare metal against light surfaces such as formica or porcelin. This residue is comprised of metal and is the reason why the contacts are fooled into beleiving your phone is still docked. This residue cannot be blown out in most cases, it must be wiped off.

Regular dust, which is all that can be blown out of the port, does not possess any conductive properties such as metal and therefore will not interfere in this way.

Try it, let me know if this works for you.

I have tried EVERYTHING from cleaning the dock thoroughly (even right below the home button), resetting my phone, home and lock button shut off, upgrading iOS, recording a voice memo... And I have had no success. I've come to the conclusion that I should just replace the dock. Since I don't live near an Apple store, I'll just replace it on my own. The dock connector ( a generic one) runs about $5-$6 on Amazon. And I found a useful step-by-step guide on replacing the dock here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+4S+Dock+Connector+Replacement/7278

I will let you know how it goes. I'm very disappointed with Apple since my phone is ~6 months old and so many people experience the same exact problem. But I'm hoping this will finally help.

FIXED: ➕➕➕ Search You Tube for this video: "IPhone FIX for no volume / sound / ringer" Basically, all you need to do is clean the dock connector port with a clean business card cut into about 1/3rd size to fit. Works like a champ now! Dirt, lint, and pocket debris all gather and conspire to convince your Iphone that it is in a sound dock--when it's not. The sad part is, that an Apple employee probably could have updated this thread with this FIX, but did not.
