iWeb Replacement

Is Apple going to be replacing iWeb anytime soon? I really don't like the the alternatives. Freeway Pro, Rapidweaver and Sandvox. I have them all and none do I like. Too many add on things in hopes of making a better page. Too much cost.

I really want iWeb or a new version now. iWeb is OK but limited now because of no further support.

You're right, "Pages" (along with the remainer of iWork) has been completely rewritten. But Apple has left "Pages" behind -- along with it's user base. That part I'm well aware of and if you would read just some of the user comments and feedback about the new Pages, you would know this.

Pages 5.0 is not worthy of the name "Pages." It's a completely crippled version of the old software, suitable for tablet users, but not for serious word-processing.

EverWeb may be similar to iWeb. I'll get the 'free' version to check it out. But at $80, the price is not comparable to iWeb at all.

Well no of course the price won't be comparable to iWeb even if the app is and that is because it is not an Apple product. However, with iWeb, if you remember, one click publishing to MobileMe was $99 per year, so that is comparable.

EverWeb is the closest that you will ever get to iWeb, so there is no learning curve and the layout is mostly the same as iWeb, but with SEO built into it and the ability to use drop down menus from within the app if you want to. The html snippet also injects the code directly into your site rather than as an iframe which happened with iWeb.

I disagree. There is nothing out there that is as quick and easy to use as iWeb. To say it is "close" is true, but doesn't cut it. Why pay $80 when you can get something better for free? Apple, if you are listening . . . you screwed up royal by not continuing with iWeb. You also screwed up royal by rewriting iWork. Keep it up and you will be repeating history!

EverWeb is equivalent to iWeb with a MobileMe account..

As far as I remember, a MobileMe annual subscription cost $99 per year which is the same as EverWeb with hosting.

This would them make the EverWeb app free in comparison. iWeb was never free in the sense that upgrades had to be paid for.

EverWeb offers the app, tech support, upgrades and hosting - all for $99 per year.

That's like saying a lemon is the same as an orange as long as you paint it yellow. Makes sense to me...

What we are saying is that Apple has changed - big time. At one time they offered solid software that worked in the way we wanted it to work, at a reasonable price. They garnered a user-base because of that. They then drop the ball (perhaps "throw the ball away" would be a better analogy, e.g. iWeb, iWork) indicating they do not take responsibility for the thing they created, nor are they accountable to their user-base for what that user-base has created using Apple's products.

In selecting software, budget is a factor. When looking for equivalency, current budget is a factor. To say something is equivalent, but only at additional cost, makes your "equivalency" invalid. That's like saying I can replace my Volkswagen with a Mercedes Benz.

I have iWeb and I have independent hosting for $25/year. I'm looking for an equivalent to the first part of that statement (I.e. iWeb). I may not find it...I haven't yet.

Talking to someone at Apple, they told me that the reason iWeb wasn't kept up was because of the advent of Facebook around the same time. Makes sense, but I am not on Facebook and prefer iWeb. Great to know it works with Mavericks.

Before I learned iWeb, I learned Freeway Express. It is NOT as easy but it is similar and has an inspector palate like iWeb.

Here is one of the basic videos:

It does allow you to insert a link to further down a page, lets you preview inside a browser before you upload it, and I use Fetch as my FTP and host it on GoDaddy for about $60 a year. If you pick the Deluxe package, you can host as many websites as you want for the same price. It does not have the premade templates that iWeb has. But the html is searchable, unlike iWeb which sometimes turns a text block into an image.

There is a 'pro' version but the 'Express' works fine for me. It's $49 and they have a very active forum if you have questions: http://www.freewaytalk.net/forum/view/5. You can try it out for free with a 30 day trial.

Right, I've now redone three of my sites with Webacappella. I'm quite happy with it. It took me a good hour to get my head around it first time but then everything kind of fell into place. It's not as intuitive as iWeb and I don't like the way it handles photos, but it's easy to use and the finished websites look good. You can try it for free: http://www.webacappella.com/ If you like it you can buy it for 79 Euros.

I want to say this: All you guys who are desperately trying to hold on to iWeb - your sites now no longer work when viewed with the latest version of Explorer which was launched earlier this year and will soon have been rolled out to all PC users worldwide. So 90% of the world won't see your site properly. That's the real problem, not whether iWeb will work with your old computer, or with Maverick, or whatever. You can keep working in iWeb for as long as you like, but you will soon be the only person who can view your site.

I wish this problem was highlighted in a better way on this forum so that everyone understands that they need to find an alternative to iWeb, and fast.

Do you know the technical reason or changes that causes the new Explorer to malfunction. iWeb converts everything to common HTML. Leave it to Microsoft to screw it up. Internet Explorer is the worst browser ever created. I think you are wrong about that 90%. There are more Chrome and Firefox users than any others. I haven't seen the latest figures, but last I saw, Internet Explorer was around 11% of the browser pie. And it's getting smaller.

When the hard drive in my 2009 iMac (running Lion) died, I got a refurb 2012 iMac that came with Mountain Lion pre-installed. I installed my latest version of iWeb and it works like a charm. I never hosted with Mobile Me, I've always hosted with Blue Host and I use a free FTP, Easy iWeb Publisher. I love that iWeb is not just easy to use but once I learned how to customize it all, I loved it even more. I've tried all the free trials of the "alternatives" and don't like any of them but if I am forced to give up iWeb at some point, I'll probably go with Freeway Express or go to Wordpress, though as an artist, I really like having a real site that iWeb has enabled.

I love iWeb too. Unfortunately, Facebook launched soon after Apple came out with iWeb and they felt it was no longer needed. Just wanted to say I have used Freeway Express and find it very close to iWeb. Freeway Express gives you a few more options, such as creating a link for further down a long page, which iWeb does not do.

I can't get my head around WordPress. But my head is old . . . . .

For iWeb I just start with a blank black or white page . . I love being able to tilt art and never use any of the templates. (http://newcollegepix.com/Intro.html) Long live iWeb!
