Alluminum housing durability?

Hey, all.
So, after having my iBook for four years now, I am finally thinking of upgrading. I know the issues with the whine and such, but I have a question about the durablility of the alluminum case of the MacBook Pro. I am so used to the plastic, and I wonder if the alluminum is just as durable?
Does it dent easily or scratch easily and so on? Is it somewhat comparable to the plastic?

Thanks.

and isn't it covering up the built-in speakers?

No. It is just a crappy picture. If you look at the closeup you can see that it is not. It just goes around the touchpad covering the palm rest area with little cutouts where the hinge catches are. It also includes a keyboard cover for when traveling. Helps prevent the keys from damaging the screen surface.

As far as being a heat trap I have noticed no difference in core dou temps with it on or off.
