New Option to turn off EU Volume Cap?

Hi all,

Just purchased my new ipod classic 160gb from Argos in the UK and was a bit worried about the EU volume limit cap that everyone goes on about as I have been using my 30gb ipod video 5.5g which obviously hasn't got the cap.

Anyway, I went into volume settings and there is an option there to enable or disable the EU volume Cap. Well naturally I turned it to off and hey presto, the volume is as loud as my 5.5g video.

So, is this a new option as i've read nothing about it on the forums etc?

Very happy here!

hi john,

tbh, i'm not a major audiophile although i do like to make sure my mp3's/aac's are 320 (256 minimum).

I listen only through RHA MA350 headphones, an older Altec Lansing (100 quid) sound dock and my car (mazda cx5).

i'm sure there are differences between them, but i would gladly trade this for the 160gb storage.

i have no problem with the sound quality.

I don't believe there is anything on the outside of the box that would indicate the version number of the software. The obvious solution therefore, is to ask the staff at the store to let you look in the iPod's settings (Settings/Volume Limit) and look for the additional option as mentioned by Badgorr.

Given that the Classic has now been discontinued, if you want 160GB of storage, you may want to simply get a Classic and if it does not have the option to turn off the EU Volume Limit, buy yourself an external pocket amplifier, as I mentioned in my post in February.

I personally have the Fiio E11 amplifier and use the Fiio L3 line out dock cable to connect from the iPod to the amplifier. Check them out at Amazon

and the lead is

Alternatively, the Boosteroo amplifier can also be found at Amazon.

It was suggested to me today that if I manage to get a new Classic with 2.0.5 firmware and I turn the EU volume limiter off, the first time that I use I-Tunes the limiter will be turned on again.

Correct? Any way around this?

If that is what actually happens, then as previously stated - buy a pocket amplifier.

Also, now that the Classic has been discontinued how long will it be before I-Tunes ceases to recognize it?

No idea. Nor has anyone else here.
