Why is my Macbook Pro running so slow?

i have 2 dns server. How do I chec if they are correct. My macpro laptop is brand new and the internet most of the time is very slow or unresponsive that I have to reload the page many times. but sometimes it is very fast.

Linc Davis, you're my hero - my Internet connection has been like molasses for months. Like others, I had a lot of trouble running down the problem because of so many variables.

Took your advice on changing my DNS servers and so far, so good. Seriously - you are the MAN!

Having read numerous posts about this I ended up taking my Late 2011 MBP to Apple genius bar. They ran a test and discovered there was a software issue that was causing my MBP to run slow, and frustratingly it was intermittent, but too annoying.

They ended up scrubbing the hard drive and reinstalling Yosemite and it is like I HAVE A NEW COMPUTER!

Unfortunately I did not do a great job of backing up and alas I lost some home movie files which I thought were kept in iTunes. Key lessons learned.

1. If you have a problem go to Apple

2. Make sure you back up everything.

3. The guy at Apple reckons Clean My Mac might have cause the problem. (Who knows) But I am know reluctant to use it again.

This is not really an answer but i can assure you that the Internet is slow because of Yosemite. I have complained on numerous occasions to no avail and I'm constantly disconnecting from the Network and then connecting again to get some sort of life in my internet. Also, my two daughters have standard windows computers, play minecraft, surf the internet etc and have absolutely no internet problems whatsoever, so yes, this to me says its my operating system. Plus before Yosemite it was fine. At the moment i would not buy another Macbook because of this which is a shame because i love my Apple products. Im just hoping with the next instalment of a operating system update, september i think, all will be solved.

I have a Macbook Pro that runs OS X 10.9.5. I have read tons of posts regarding Mac's that are slowing down and was having tons of similar issues, mostly internet related, and I have high speed 30Mbps coming in. From iTunes always taking forever to connect to url while trying to sample songs to Safari working fast one minute then stalling out the next. I put together the steps some others have posted and it was a COMPLETE SUCCESS. iTunes and Safari are flying with absolutely no stalling. Apparently tons of people have no idea that the default DNS addresses stored in their network settings are bogged down addresses that cause all these problems. I am not even close to being a computer wizard, but here are the steps I took (I wrote this so even a 3rd grader could understand):

1) Download 'namebench' for Mac (a program that finds the fastest possible DNS locations for your computer)

-after downloading, a screen comes up showing your current DNS addresses and automatically has a 'check' in the box to search for DNS servers. Then click 'start' at the bottom right

-after a few minutes of scanning it will return a report/webpage that lists the top 3 DNS connections for your computer (located at the top right of the report). Keep this webpage up or minimize it while you do the next steps.

2) Click your apple icon at the top left of your screen, then click 'System Preferences'

3) Find and click the 'Network' icon

4) If you connect by Wi-Fi, it will likely already be selected, in which case click the 'Advanced' button at the bottom right.

5) Click the 'DNS' tab at the top, and on the left where it lists your DNS servers, go to the bottom and click the '+' button. This should automatically erase the 3 listed in the box and allow you to type in new ones.

6) Go back to the Namebench report and type in each address starting with the top address in the report (After you enter the first address click the '+' again to add the second, and '+' one last time to add the third.

7) Click 'OK' at the bottom right, that screen will close and bring you back to connection screen, at the bottom right click 'apply.'

8) After this, close any programs that run off the internet and simply start them back up. They should be flying.
