Flashing EFI ATMEL CHip

i'm still looking for the step by step instructions are any help for that matter on this. If anyone gets any leads, please do share. I'll do the same. (nerd619 @ hotmail dot com)

Hi mkpier20,

This is how I deal with Flashrom:

1.) Download flashrom from: flashrom.org

2.) Make a folder in C:\ and name it what ever you want, I name it flashrom.

3.) Then depending on what format you downloaded flashrom, unpack it in C:\flashrom

4.) Run cmd from your start menu search tool textbox, once open, type: "c:\flashrom\flashrom.exe" (without quotes) and hit ENTER.

Note: for those having problems unpacking flashrom, use 7Zip or TarTool to unpack it.

I'm into that part, I just found this threat, I'm also looking for answers,

but I have done the same thing on IBM Lenovo laptops locked with both

SVP and Power on Password (POP) and was able to dump the atmel chip

file into my desktop then load the dumped file into a hex software and

was able to catch the real password and use it to unlock so many ThinkPad's.

But I have never done this on a Mac's, so this will be my first time,

but if I find a way to do it I will post it here. but would be nice if

others could share their experience.

So mkpier20 what you've found so far?

Do you have the EFI ROM to be loaded back to the ATMEL chip?

And if you do, where did you download it from?

Let me know any of your progress, I'm into the same thing...

But right now I will try one thing to see if I can remome the efi password without all of this.

I don't think this has been posted yet. This guy has a decent writeup that shows how to flash the EEPROM on earlier model Macbooks.

I'm sorry the first few repliers were rude to you and assumed you didn't know what you were talking about. They were obviously the ones who were uninformed.

Okay, so I personally tried flashing a 25Q064A SPI EEPROM chip that is found on the newer Macbook models (I'm not sure which one, I got this mainboard from work). I did not use the buspirate, I used a Raspberry Pi, but the software used was the same, Flashrom. Flashrom does not currently support this chip, but as it seems to be a standard SPI EEPROM, I am working on writing something that can communicate with it.

I had much difficulty finding any documentation for this chip. Has anyone found a good data sheet?

I am a little confused about the whole thing. Just saw the post from mkpier20. Seems like he wasn't doing that for research/academic purpose but just to savage a MacBook and hopefully can use it for free......

My question is, does EFI flash able to flash the serial number too? or just the firmware only?

Yeah he will be salvaging a Macbook, but if he does it himself he'll be learning a lot about digital protocols and a bit about micro controllers and such.

As far as the serial number, I am not sure. I'm just familiar with EEPROMs, not EFI specifically.
