Searching/No Service on iPhone 5 Wake

Over the last week I have a tremendous problem with my iPhone 5 (32gb ios 6.1.3). When I wake up the phone to make a call (slide the unlock) it shows 1 bar...then Searching.....then NO SERVICE...then it finally shows 3/4/5 bars depending on where I'm located. (I'm located in a very good LTE area - Greensboro, NC)

I contacted the Verizon team and then went over all the level 1 stuff (reseting network, turning off and then on the cell data, etc)...verifying I was in a great LTE spot, etc.....and nothing fixed it. They sent me to level 2 and they did a reset on the network side of my account as well as other steps. They said that would fix it but of course it didn't. The next morning I went to the Verizon store....they swapped out the SIM card and said that should fix the problem...And by that afternoon the problem continued. So I called them back and they went over the next level of support and this time after the problem continued they shipped me a new phone. They felt it was a hardware defect and the new phone would fix the issue.

So today the new phone arrived. I put my SIM card in the phone and activated, etc....Moved all apps and stuff over and finally finished everything up. Phone worked great.....But then it went to sleep and all of the sudden the problem has surfaced again. Im at a loss for words....

Does anyone have a clue what might be causing this to happen? It would appear at face value to be an app issue with something I have installed but I wouldn't know where to begin. I haven't installed anything in the last week and don't know why all of the sudden it is just happening. Could an app be affecting this or even be a problem?

I am having the exact issue as described by others, AND don't have the 8 Ball app on my phone. I've been to ATT and to Apple store three times, changed phones, changed SIM cards, complete restore...

I thought all was OK, as the phone worked for past two days and then the issue resurfaced just today! If this is an App vs phone issue, how does one identify which App to look at?

thanks for any help

I just did a sync with my macbook and then went to the apps area in itunes and unchecked all of them...(basically only allowing the apps that came on the phone)...then I went through the rigorous process of loading each back one at a time....fortunately I had loaded the 8ball app recently and it was my first culprit...so it didn't take long....

I will say that since removing that app I have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS with service, etc....not even a slight hint of that original problem....For those that do have the 8Ball Pool App (as fun it was) it is a nightmare on that phone signal....so get rid of it fast!

Thanks for the advice. However, I took a different tack and so far, success!

Rather than removing all of my Apps from my Iphone and restoring each one, one at a time to see if that one affected the phone's operation, I thought about which of them have I been using recently and having trouble with. There's really only one, Boingo.

I use this app in airports to connect to their service and have noticed how "aggressive" it is whereever a wireless service is available, not just theirs but any service. It can be very frustrating to deal with at times, but necessary at others.

So I deleted it from my Iphone this morning and as of this afternoon, no problems. It won't be going back on either. 🙂

Hope this helps others.

This problem was driving me crazy since I got my iPhone 5 a month ago, constantly searching and no service in places where I had no problems with the 4.

I removed Boingo (did not have 8 Ball Pool) and it looks like the problem is resolved.

However, I use Boingo when I travel sooooo......

Also, I am now wary of possible problems with future apps.....

This just happened to me on an iPhone 5, I hadnt used the phone for 2 weeks and it was completely flat. When I turned it on, the phone eternally searched for network and date was reset to 1 Jan 1970.

After removing the SIM and trying to reset network settings (neither worked), I set the date manually back to today's date and deleted the last app I knew I had installed, which was "Speedtest.net". As soon as I deleted the App, the "searching" status changed to "No Sim". So I knew it had worked.

So maybe it's fixed by deleting the last app installed (or any app that uses network heavily) rather than a particular app.

Thanks for all your suggestions here!
