Well, I had my meeting at the "genius bar" only to be told that it was an internal problem and they could do nothing for me but " we can replace it for £139. The woman at the side of me was told the same thing, I told them that I was not prepared to pay extra for a product that was obviously not fit for purpose.

All I can say is that apple have got themselves a nice little earner, the original price of a 4s plus another £139 half way through the contract, paid by the poor sods who really need their wifi and Bluetooth, feels uncomfortably like blackmail to me.

My WIFI disconnect is random, but reading through the refrenced articles does at least describe how the WIFI module can have random problems. Will try the heating and cooloing trick. Though not sure it will help.

Will also ask the Genios Bar if they can run the iphone though some heating-cooling cycles with connections to WIFI to see if the signal level drops. Would think we could find a tool that measures the signal level for the wifi, and just shows if the signal is dropping, depending on if the IPHONE is heated, or cooled.

At least the implications are that the IPHONE 4S does have an issue. Since mine is jailbroken, kind of do not want to upgarde the software, or replace it. But may need to. Would rather have a fix, while keeping the software as is.

fixed the issue with WIFI problems I have had for several months. Replaced IPHONE 4s at Apple Store. What I found is that if you do a SPEEDTEST.NET check you might find your internet speed over WIFI pulsing. Goes up and down on my faulty iphone. Make sure you test it at the least traffic point of the day. On the fixed IPHONE it is rock steady with the speed.

I've had my 4s for less than 2 weeks and yesterday it froze up on me while receiving a text. I turned the phone off and then back again. After that, my wifi was greyed out and after resetting the network settings, doing a restore as new and even trying the hair dryer trick, still doesn't work. Now on top of that, after only doing a little texting today, my battery life only lasts about 8 hours. I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow. Luckily I'm still under warranty but I just fear that the same issue will happen with a new phone. 😕

My iPhone 4s started doing the same thing last Wednesday. I tried all of the suggestions; resetting network, airplane mode, etc. to no avail. The freezer trick worked for a few hours (put the iPhone in a ziplock for 20 minutes in the freezer), but failed again. This time, WIFI was not grayed out, but it could not find any networks.

Friday appointment at the Genius Bar. My iPhone was 18 months old, still under warranty. They gave me a new one, no questions asked.

I just got a new replacement phone <1week ago.... wifi stopped yesterday - first wouldn't connect to my home network then just greyed out as everyone else said. Did every suggestion on this thread. Nothing. Chat with Apple Support - go get a new phone at the store. So many problems - trying to decide if staying with Apple is good in the long run. they have such a market share that quality seems to be degrading.....

Wifi signal is not very noise proof. It like trying to listen to a distant FM radio station by tuning the dial on your old radio. Have you ever heard static? That is what many wifi systems are trying to fight. Bunch of static wifi signals.

1) most microwave ovens pit out wifi noise

2) most bluetooth devices are on wifi noise meaning keyboard and mice and laptops

3) most HDTV put out wifi noise. More so if they are plasma

4) it's not always the apple device that can't connect. The new CHROMECAST device refuses to connect in my house. Sent it back. New wifi external USB antenna failed to also connect to a desktop computer in my house.

5). Start migrating to 5ghz wifi. More channels. More noise suppression. Overall smarter technology.
