Macbook Pro With Retina temperature while under load.

I'm concered about my macbook's heat.

It gets almost to hot to touch while playing games on windows 8 and I get temps of 90 C while working on large photoshop documents with multiple layers. (using an app called Temperture Monitor) While idle I get temps between 45 and 50 degrees.

This has been happening since I got this macbook and I didn't really think of it, but I want to game more often and it just gets so hot. I'm also worried because I'm pretty sure I voided my warrenty when I spilled a bottle of water on it while sitting down at my desk, not even a month after i got it -_-;. Mostly over the track pad area, so I don't think much water got in.., but I turned it upside down immediately, shut it off, and set it in a huge box full of rice for a week and a few days. It seemed good to go after that and I didn't experience any problems.

So first question, are my temps okay?

If not, i guess, what do I do considering I may have voided my warrenty?

@zomby:

Yeah I was refering to GPU, what i have seen that it always runs at higer temp.

GPU gets to 50-60 C easily with normal usage.

@qwsxcd:

I have never heard any heating issue atleast with this keypad warming problem with normal usage

on non retina macbook pro.

After paying this much for these premium laptops, it is disappointing that we need to go through

these details and constantly see how this things is behaving. Specially when they say they have

redesigned the cooling system which is getting more hotter then the non retina macbook.

I am thinking for trying with one more replacement. I love this display, over all look and

performance of this macbook but it looks very weird to work on warm keypad (feeling warm

air coming out of it).

suprisingly I have never felt warming keypad issue with my sony laptop which is still running

with out any single problem after 4-5 years!!!

I am saying that 90C at full load is maybe OK for these, 100C-110C definitely is not.

See my earlier post. We agree. 😉

I linked to intel's specifications which indicate the absolute max temp is 105C, after that it should shut down.

Thanks for the link. As stated, I knew it was between 100 and 110, but not the exact temp. Now we all know the specific temp.

Mine is now on the THIRD logic board specifically because 100C+ temps.

Apple's strategy was: 1.) Deny problem, 2.) Replace logic board, 3.) Deny problem, 4.) Replace logic board again, 5.) Stone wall.

It's still not fixed.

Can you replicate the problem (temps) at the Apple Store? If so, I don't know how they can deny it, and I would politely but firmly point out all the prior issues and ask for a new machine.

Let me pile on. I souped up version with 16g etc in December and have been noticing the heat issue and I am glad I ran into this thread. I even ordered this week an SF-19 cooling pad with twin fans and AC power to cool down this microwave.

I did run into something that looks very promising since last night. Ran the Activity Monitor and noticed multiple threads of Chrome Helper taking 10 to 20% of the cpu. I killed these processes and I am now un the low 30's C for heat when I was in the 90's. I am going to give Chrome a rest for a while and see if this maybe a contributor.

Just my own experience so take it for what is worth

Paco.

All day today. This is just a sample but all data points were consistently low.

Yup. Chrome is an intesive app sometimes. Make sure you're only running the extensions you absolutely need. Chrome splits everything into a bunch of different processes to make things go faster, though apparently, not quite as efficient. Flash block extension helps with the heat as flash is super power hungry.

I have noticed that doing a fresh install of OS X Mavericks VS having upgraded form Mountain Lion helps. I also did a clean install of Windows 8.1 on bootcamp and that runs MUCH much cooler than it did previously on 8.

Not sure what happened. Apple did update bootcamp drivers, so maybe somewhere they made some improvements under the hood. It has been a few years. I'm not complaining.
