Messages on my mac will not send or receive messages

I have my apple ID enabled in the settings for messages on my iPhone and on my macbook air. I am logged in and I have all of my contacts available, but when I try to send a message it is blue and I get the red exclamation point that says the message was not sent. I also do not receive any iMessages on my computer when I am logged in. I am, however, still receiving them on my phone.

I've been trying for 2 days to get this to work. What can I do?

Hi,

You have joined a thread that is nearly 3 years old from when it was started.

It is in Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x) which would have Messages 7.x.x. as a version.

Are you using Mountain Lion ?

If the Main Messages window has iMessages listed as the account but says it is Inactive are you trying to make it active in the Preferences > Accounts > iMessages Account ?

This should be via the "Enable this Account" box.

If you are using Mountain Lion then go to the Apple Icon Menu top left of the Menu Bar.

Select About this Mac.

In the panel that appears click twice on the line that shows you the OS X version.

This will change to the Build Number first click and when you click that it will show you the Serial Number.

Is the Serial Number present ? (You needed it after the OS X 10.8.2 update).

If none of this applies what are you using ?
