Iphone 5 charger keeps on breaking.

Over the past five months, I have purchased over five different charger cables for my iphone 5 which i bought new in December. For some reason, after months, weeks or even days, he latest charger stops working. Sometimes the phone is plugged in and it doesn't respond at all to the cable, other times, the cable only functions when in a certain position. I am so angry at this as I'm spending and will continue to spend a lot of money to charge my phone. Am I doing something wrong? (This was never an issue with my iphone 3 and the cable even worked when the connector head seemed half broken off). What should I do? And also, is anyone else having this issue, because if not, then it must be an issue with my actual phone, no?

Thanks

iPhone 5

Why does everyone keep defending apple on this? The cables suck. They should be able to handle normal use. If not they wouldn't replace them for free. Everyone else can make good cables that can take normal life conditions. And just because they replace it doesn't make it ok. It shouldn't break in the first place. They should warn us when we buy the phone that we'll have to make inconvenient visits to the apple store periodically to replace the crappy cables.

The new lightning cable is of far lower quality than the cables provided with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4. The quality of cable started to drop with the iPhone 4S as the supplier clearly tried to cut costs by using less material. I still have all the original chargers from the 3G, 4 and 4S and the 4S cable is in the worst condition of them all. The problem is that they started to use less sheathing to re enforce the cable at the phone adapter end thus exposing the internal cores to greater wear and tear. You can tell by just looking at and feeling the newer cables in your hand, they are lighter and clearly more flimsy. Blaming people on this forum for not handling the cables correctly just because the cables you have are still in one piece is nonsense, you have no idea how people handle their cables. I am super anal about cables and treat them with the greatest care yet my girlfriend is now through her second iPhone lightning cable...... It is a no brainer, the cables aren't up to the job,I mean she had no problem whatsoever with the cable for her 3G or 4. As for Allan Sampson, no one cares about your BUSINESS iPhone, no one cares about your 158 lightning chargers positioned strategically around Texas to ensure you never run out if juice on you BUSINESS iPhone and how in the name of goodness would you possibly know what Apple call their various charging components in different countries around the world?!?!? If you think that Apple don't change their terminology between regions then you are just as ignorant as your forum posts would suggest you are, unless of course you worked for Apple and knew something I didn't?!?!?

Well Sabina, if your charger keeps breaking then DON'T buy it form apple. No offense Apple has very cheap chargers and mine repeatedly kept breaking also, so instead I went to my mobile phone company for one. They are in the $40-$45 dollar range. The chargers mobile phone company's have other than Apple are very durable and will last you a long time.

AshenRune, some people aren't well... "Hygienic" with their own chargers as other people. Some are not responsible, or it's just a accident. For example I left my phone charger on the ground ONE TIME and my dog runs into the room and chews on it. That would be Ok because it's one time. Most people ruin their chargers the first time they don't take care of it. Most people in the world have a natural "lazy side" in them so it's only human to make a mistake like this.

Hygienic? Do you think we are a bunch of animals or something that do know how to use electronics? I had my cable for a week and it broke. I didn't pee on it nor did I flush it down the toilet. I don't have a dog and no children. Every product has a certain percentage that is defective. It just so happens that these new lightening cables have a high percentage that are defective. This also means that some people will have cables that never break. So in this case, with so many issues, and such a high percentage of defective cables, we can conclude that the cables suck. Just because you lucked up and got a cable that isn't defective doesn't mean the rest of us are stupid.

So if your cable breaks just get a new one under warranty. If you keep getting bad cables then invest in an a 3rd party cable thati mght be better.

Hi Nerdy_Blue,

I had similar problems to you: cables that are more fragile than they ought to be, and smartass comments from other users who (in all likelihood) are either apple employees or individuals wanting a gold star for longevity of cable use.

What is interesting is that there appears to be a number of class action lawsuits regarding the lightening connectors on the following accounts(1).

The issues surrounding lightening cables are widely reported in the media (2,3,4,5).

To be clear, I actually like the lightening connectors. But they are let down by their fragility, so hopefully this will be an issue that will be addressed by apple in the future.

We have been through 2 Apple cables, a Belkin and a Currys PC World cable. All have failed, the Currys cable is failing. (UK user btw)

What happens to is is they work for a while OK, then slowly start to be tempremental. Phone starts buzzing multiple times indicating the charging is starting/stopping. Then after a while they stop all together.

We have had cables from 3 vendors and all failed. I have also had 3 from a cheapy wholesaler, all three of these broke too.

I think maybe there is an issue with the standards the cables need to be made too. 50k views on this forum mean that this is an issue and no everyone is posting about it.

We needed an Apple Store appointment to get a replacement becuase the guys in the store cant do it on their own, and appointments in London / North Kent are bloody rare at the moment (maybe everyone is getting the Lightning cabels replaced!).

Remind me never to go to Central Texas.

I have had this problem. I am also sick to death of having to keep fuelling high street shops with money for these when they break. My chargers have lasted roughly 1.5 months each before breaking. So every 1.5 months over the last year and a bit I have kept on buying an offcial Apple charger for £20, stupidly not realising, as someone has already pointed out, that there is a 1 year warranty. So I have taken the last one back and got a straight refund.

Since then, I purchased an Amazon Basics USB Charger, which cost £11.99. It is heavy duty, clunky, hard wearing and has lasted longer than any of the rubbish I've bought from high street shops. Apple really need to sort this out. People need to realise that there is a one year warranty on them, but it's still a pain to have to keep going back to the shop 8 times a year to exchange it.

Iphone 5 charger keeps on breaking.
