my ipad has a black screen. i tried rebooting it, connecting it to itunes with computer, nothing works, the screen is still black. i can hear it connect when i plug it in tomcharge or when i connect it to computer and it shows up in itunes but the screen stays black on ipad and i cannot access anything. what can i do. what does this mean?

What events preceeded the black screen appearance?
the ipad fell off my car seat a few months ago when i made a turn but it didnt turn off or shut down it seemed fine. about four weeks ago i started to get this black screen randomly & i would press the home button & start button at the same time & the ipad would turn back on. this has happened about four times in the past four weeks but this last time nothing worked to clear the back screen
Try this. It seems you have nothing to lose. Search this discussion group for "Red screen." Read the testimonials.
Turn your iPad face down on your lap and spank the back a few times with the palm of your hand, checking to see if the screen returns to normal. If not, spank with increasing firmness, again, checking from time to time.
This has worked for both the "red screen" problem and the "black screen." It seems something came loose when it fell. If it works, handle it gently, as the loose part might once again shift.

i was going to try what you suggested but i noticed a faint apple when i turned the ipad on. i went into a dark room & pressed the home button i can see the screen change but its very very faint, should i still tap it??
Try a "reset" first. Search here for "Reset iPad."
As I recollect, to reset, hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons buttons simultaneously for 10-15 seconds until you see the "apple" appear. Ignore the slider. Then release the buttons.You will not lose anything. But search "Reset" first.
If that doesn't work, I'd say go ahead and try it. You seem to have nothing to lose.
Well, what resolved it??? The "Reset" or the "spanking"?
For me the solution was spanking 🙂. My iPad fell from my bed last night and I got the "black screen of death". After reseting and restoring it, nothing happened. A few spanks, and everything back to work. Thank you very much!!!
This spanking fixed my friends ipad also, i think it must have enjoyed it it lit up straight away :-)
I cannot believe that this just worked, but it did. Also, this ipad has not been dropped and it lives in a survivor case, so I am a little baffled about it. But after trying everything else, I read this post and gave it a few taps. It immidiately came on. Thank you!!!!!
I thought this was a joke but gave it a go and can't quite believe it worked.

My son dropped his ipad while on vacation, and all we could see was a blank screen. After reading your suggestion, I tried bonking it on the back and, by george, it now works just fine! Thank you thank you thank you!!
Just fyi. This problem does return after a few months and progressively gets worse till your smashing it every 5 seconds. Waiting on some tools too take my Iphone 5 apart to find out what the issue is with the connection. Having the same exact problem. Just has progressed into not coming on at all with out a ton of smashing
I CANNOT believe it, but smacking our iPod 4 when it had the black screen of death worked!!! We could see the device in iTunes, but couldn't get the screen to wake up. We smacked it twice, that's it, and it's working. Such a hilarious fix!
Any insight based on the tools you got and what you found? Can you share? Also, can you please share info on the tools, such as where can they be purchased?
my boyfriend had the same problem too.....his ipad's lights turned off but still working......i told him to hold the home button and the sleep/walk button at the same time...and fortunately the ipad turned ok...
