black screen of death?

Thank you mezorba. Holding down both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button for 15 seconds fixed my black screen of death on my iPad 3. You rock!

I have tried the spanking on the troubled ipad(2) and nothing work. I was about to scrap the ipad when one of my co-worker suggested to use an apple hdmi cable adapter to see if the ipad displays anything on the tv; So I went ahead and use the hdmi adapter and plug it into a tv. The trick is to give it a minute or so and if you dont see your ipad homescreen displayed on the tv disconnect the hdmi adapter from the ipad. When i did this somehow my homescreen reappeared and was displaying the homescreen instead of the black screen of death.

Spanking my iPad2 worked to get the screen to come back, after it fell off a desk. I tried recovering, restoring... nothing worked to get rid of the black screen... until it got a spanking from behind. Thanks for the tip, it worked GREAT!

I dont know why or how this works but it did.

I dropped my ipad onto the library floor tile yesterday and got the black screen of death.

Went immediately to the nearest apple store, made an appointment with a genius who told me it would most likely have to be replaced.

I left, bought myself a piece of key lime pie and coffee to ease my hurts.

Looked up on my phone any last desparate resorts and found your post.

Gave it a try and the screen came back! (albeit not perfect, but a couple more spanks did the job to bring it to 97%).

You are most welcome. However, remember that you now have a loose component in your iPad, so handle it very gently!!!

While making an attempt to fix the problem, the iPad fell off my table. I picked it up and pressed the home button, and it was fine... lol

My iPad 2 started off with a red/fuzzy screen, so I followed the tips to spank it a few times and it worked for about a minute or two and then it started to go fuzzy again. All of a sudden I now have a black screen...I know it's on, but I have tried spanking it again, tried holding down the home & lock buttons at the same time with no luck (it just turns it off and back on)....

This is the stupidest bit of good advice that I ever tried with an apple product and whih worked. Could be just coincidence.

On the other hand, I am extremely unhappy with teh behaviour of the iPad's built-in Music app; it freezes, crashes, prevents screen from swiping and might be at the root of these black screens.

I am extremely surprized and disappointed that Apple have redesigned the old app into this useless freak. Please admin, if you read this, pass the message along to improve the built-in music app

just had the issue on my ipad 2 on the first day of a holiday (which meant the flight home with nothing to entertain a toddler for 4 hours was a chore...)

Just punched the living daylights out of the ipad and it seems to be working. duff connection it seems somewhere then...

My girlfriend has the same problem on her iPad 1. We took it in to Apple, and we were told it was unserviceable we had to buy a new one, and that they'll give us $50,00 for our old one to apply it towards the purchase of a new one, We said no and took our old one home where it sat for a year. today I decided to take it apart and see if there was anything obviously wrong with it, and to my surprise there was a loose digitizer cable! This cable has a locking mechanism that is only held by a piece of tape, which came loose, unlocking the cable! I reconnected the cable and the iPad works as good as new!

I'm sorry, I said "digitizer" cable, but it's actually the LCD screen cable. Apologies....
