I dropped my iphone 5 into the toilet last Thursday at 11pm. I took it out of the water within 1 min. I dried it with a towel and shaked to remove the water out of the ports. The screen was still on for 2 mins then it turned green with black stripes then it shut down. I took 2 screws at the bottom of the phone and the sim card out, the put the phone into a sealed rice bag. I've been keeping it there until 11:50pm today (~ 48 hrs). I took it out and charged it. It makes the charging noise but the screen is still black. Then it kept peeping. I removed it from the charger right away and put it back to the rice bag. Anyone knows what happened to my phone? Is the screen damage?

Last night I put 3 silica bags into the rice bag. This morning, it turned on. The screen was still a little bit wet inside but it functioned well. I left it back into the sealed rice bag with 3 silica bags in there to let it dry more. I've just realized that the silica bags help to dry out the water much much better than the uncooked rice alone. Also, be patient, give it at least 3.5 days. Since I plugged it in the charger too soon (~48hrs), the screen was still wet.

I'll check my phone tmr to see if it's completely dry.

Hi. Just dropped my phone in the water in the sink and pulled it out immediately. I have it in a bag of rice now. My biggest concern is that I can't turn it off. When I do try to turn it off, it powers down then turns itself right back on. I tried a few times and gave up. I don't have the Pentalobe screwdriver to open the case and take out the battery. I know of no other way to turn it off. Any suggestions? Also, does it not make sense to open up the back and take out the battery just to help the drying process? From any advice I've found online, no one seems to say to do this. Is it really better to leave it in rice for a couple of days than simply open it up and dry it out with a cool fan?

Much thanks!
Marie

I've found 2 - 3 days to be too short to get all moisture using raw rice.

The iPhone is not designed to be user serviceable and removing the battery is not a simple process. If the phone is severely corroded you can always do an out-of-warranty replacement at an Apple Store for $269. If you open it you lose this opportunity.

Hmm...interesting. Thanks for the info. I like how a couple people have said "you can just do a replacement for $269" like it's $5.00 or something. That's a lot of money. I don't have that kind of money to replace my phone. It sounds like opening it up doesn't do any physical harm to it. If there's water inside I would think the faster it's dried the better, and that opening it up would be the fastest way to get it dry. It's amazing to me that simply opening your own phone and taking out the battery actually voids your warrantee and replacement options. What other electronic device has such a policy? What other device makes it difficult to get the battery out and replace it? I totally love Apple and Apple products, but things like this are ridiculous. It's obvious why they do it.
