MacBook Pro shuts down randomly

My MacBook Pro 15" i7 (Medio 2010) keeps randomly shutting down, with and without the powercable connected. This problem occurred months ago and I still haven't been able to fix it. I'm running Mountain Lion, and yes, I've read all the other topics about this.

Here's what I did:

  • SMC reset;
  • SMC update (SMC-versie (systeem): 1.58f17), which is the latest for my MacBook;
  • PRAM reset;
  • Reïnstalled Mountain Lion;
  • Called customer service;
  • Checked 'Automatic graphics switching';
  • Automatic log-out is unchecked.

My battery cycles: 297.

Is there anything else I can do? I'm getting desperate.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 8GB RAM, 2,66 GHz Intel Core i7,

It's the graphic card. Some Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro have got a defective NVIDIA graphic card which may cause unexpected restarts, black screens, kernel panics...

Make a backup of your files, print the Barney-15E's link and your kernel panic log, and take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller

May 18, 2013 7:05 AM in response to Huwae

You may want to uninstall Soundflower as it is known to cause problems, unless they've recently updated the drivers.

I doubt you will get any grief from the service center, but it may alleviate any problems.

The service center will run a short test that immediately confirms whether it is a covered Mac. I'm not sure what the test does, but probably checks the logic board/GPU to see if it was in the bad lot. There are apparently some that do not have this problem.

May 19, 2013 7:08 AM in response to Huwae

There is a program, gfCardStatus (http://gfx.io/), to switch the GPU into one mode or the other. I think it worked for some. That might give you a temporary workaround to keep it from crashing until you take it in.

The GPU on that Mac can switch between the inboard graphics and the more powerful GPU. It let's you force it into one mode or the other (which used to be available in System Prefs). I'm not sure if Mountain Lion allows that any more, and may be the reason it doesn't work to prevent the crashes. Mountain Lion uses the GPU a lot more than previous OS's.

Jul 31, 2013 3:31 AM in response to Huwae

I have been experiencing this problem with my

2 GHz, i7 MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)

It has happened around six times in the last few months.

I return to the MBP to find it is totally unresponsive.

It won't wake up at all, and I am forced to hard reset it by holding down the power key.

It also seems to be running very slowly lately, and taking ages to start up and to load Mail and various other programs.

Wading through treacle...

Could this problem be affecting my model too?

Sep 11, 2013 5:55 AM in response to thomas_r.

My computer just started doing the same thing. Does this look like the recall problem?
