Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 will not install. After installing, it just reappears in update tab on Mac App Store.

I have tried, multiple times, to intall the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2. Each time it installs, it restarts my computer and appears to install fine. After logging back into my RMBP and going back into the update tab on the Mac App Store, the 1.2 update appears again. If I update it, this process just repeats.

Anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?

Thank you.

Looking back at my posts in this thread, it looks like I had already tried the firmware update about 30 times and that was in June. I have tried at least 30 times since, both from the App Store and from the downloaded installer. I tried with something plugged into the thunderbolt port and nothing plugged into it. The power cord was never an issue as this is on an iMac. (I've worked in Apple software development since 1992, so I like to think that I'm at least somewhat competent at troubleshooting stuff on the Mac, and I was pretty sure I'd exhausted my troubleshooting options but was just too lazy to haul my big iMac to the GB.) Then this week I noticed for the first time in ages that there wasn't a notification badge on my App Store icon, looked in the App Store, and it appears that the install failed on the 26th and "took" on the 27th. I don't know if something changed on the App Store end, and I can't think of what changed on my end (I'd updated to 10.9.1 long before that), so I can't explain it.

I'm guessing there's some sort of life lesson about persistence somewhere in this story ... if you don't succeed, just try, try (x60) again?

Here it is Sep 2014, and this problem is STILL HAPPENING!!! I have an older macbook pro with the latest Mavericks. The APP store has the notification ⚠ that I need to do the firmware update for thunderbolt. I've done the update (with the power cord in place) and reset/reboot twice, seemingly without errors. But the badge is still there. ARGHHHH

For what it's worth, I was able to fix the problem by installing it via a shut down and start-up, rather than a restart. After the App Store finished the download and it prompted me to restart, instead of going ahead, I selected "Not Now," then manually shut down, waited a second, and started back up again. For whatever reason, it worked. Nothing else to that point had: power cable was plugged in, no Thunderbolt devices were connected, and I reset the SMC several times.

Im having the same problem as everyone else. I have tried over 40x times now.

it comes to the firmware update screen with the progress bar but abruptly shuts down before progressing.

its a 2012 27" iMac. I have tried absolutely all tips the people have posted here, aswell as anywhere on the internet. Absolutely nothing has done the trick. I want to use my thunderbolt ports again!!

One question though.. how do I know if I am actually resetting the SMC? On my macbook pro I can see the magsafe led changing but on the iMac there is no proof it worked.. maybe i am not doing it right and thats the problem.. who knows, any ideas?

also if I have el capitan installed then the downloaded installer isn't compatible and I have to install from the app store. So i am using yosemite. I have also tried on 10.8 and 10.9 versions.

I don't know if people are still having this issue i just got the new 5k iMac and i was using my thunderbolt display and it would not update no madder how many times i tried, so i then plugged the thunderbolt display and the AC power that it supplies to my MacBook Pro and i was able to update it through that and no problems. Hope this helps if this is still a problem for anyone.
