iPhone 4s sound problem!?

Okay so this started agesss ago when i downloaded ios5? I figured that when i updated the software it would be fixed! But no unfortunately. Anyway the problem is that the sound on my iPhone 4s randomly stops working! Alarms still sound but thats it. I can try and adjust the volume but when i press the volume button the speaker picture shoes but none of the white dots to show that the sound is turning up. Same with when i try and slide the volume up, theres no slidey thing there. 😟 Is there anyone that knows how i can fix this!? The sounds works sometimes, but most of the time it doesnt. Otherwise the only time i can hear siund is through headphones. and after i take the headphones out the sond goes back to not working.....

This is driving me crazy! Any help would be greatttt. 🙂

Hi..

I am facing a very unique problem in my 4s. When i make a voice call, there is a lot of disturbance in the speaker, and the same even when i attach a microphone or a blue tooth and i can not listen to the other person. Whereas there is no disturbance when i play a song on the device or speak on viber.

Speaker replaced, phone formatted, but problem remains the same.

Any suggesstions friends?????

SO. My problem with my phone is that I can't get the sound to work. Nothing has worked. Once in a while I can get sound on it, but only for texting sounds. If I try to listen to music. I can probably (IF I AM LUCKY) get two songs worth out of it. But even still the sound will go out at some point during one of the songs. All of this started two nights ago when I dropped it at work. My brother had the same problem with his phone and he said he didn't remember how his got fixed.

I tried restarting my phone, thinking that would work and low and behold another problem added itself to the sound issue. When I rest my phone I got an additional 500 some songs (over 1,000 songs) on my phone. My brother and I share this account so some of the songs are his and some are mine. I can't delete the songs that arent mine. The only time they aren't on my phone is if it's plugged into a charger. But even still I can't listen to any of the music because the sound is gone!

Blowing in the headphone jack or the dock jack. So any suggestions?! Cause none of anything ya'll have suggested works.

I had SAME EXACT PROBLEM. No sound from iphone speaker, but headphone and docking speaker worked fine. I used a needle to pull out wads of lint fom the charging area and it works perfectly now. I didn't see lint until i shined a flashlight in there and started digging the lint out with the needed.

This definitely made a big difference, no I have no sound problems.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Not sure if this is just a special case or not, but I tried to clean everything and it never helped the problem. I would plug my headphones in and Music/Media would play fine. Unplug them and only ringtones/alerts would work *sometimes*. Bascially after skimming through the posts here I thought maybe it was the cable I had just bought today which is a Sync/Charge usb cable. I went back and used my old one which is just for charging and everything worked fine. Music played, volume buttons showed up on screen so i could adjust, no other problems. Plugged the sync/charge cable back in and problem happened again.

So for me, the fix came when i used my old charge cable that has the interchangable connectors. The basic sync/charge cable is what appears to be messing with the sound.

Hello EVERYONE with this on going issue with sound problems!

After following, reading, trying every single thing mentioned in these community discussions for months upon months, the mystery has been once and for all solved. So YES! There is a solution to this issue, but only ONE! You have to replace the charging port! It only cost me $6.95 (including tools and free shipping), three days for delivery, and 15 minutes to install. I went to Amazon. It's actually pretty easy as long as you are careful. You can find video instructions on YouTube. Like I said I literally tried everything everyone (God bless you all), offered as solutions but the problem ALWAYS came back. Please hear me that this will be the ONLY THING that will work. I don't understand why Apple wouldn't address this or offer this, if any, advice to anyone to save their customers from all this! (Some of these community discussions go back a couple years). The next community discussion should be about Apple kicking in to pay their obviously loyal customers back for this. Good luck to all!!

I have the same issue. I've noticed the issue lies within the iPhone 4s dock (which is seemingly obvious, but let me explain). When I use a safety pin/paper clip to wiggle the little bar (or whatever it's technically called) on the inside of the charger dock it temporarily fixes the issue... And that's another part of the problem, it's only temporary. I looked at it closely with a light and I think one of the gold strips (look at your phone's dock and you should be able to figure out what I mean by this) on the inside of it is broken off. Thus, I believe, causing the issue due to some kind of short. You guys may have the same issue...

P.S. Sorry if anyone can't quite grasp what I'm describing. I tried my best to explain, but I'm not too sure what every intricate piece of the iPhone is called.

I just bought iPhone 4S 32GB Black with iOS 7.1.1 about 3 months ago. I found the phone interesting as I love to use Apple devices. Couple of weeks ago I realized that phone had an issue with sounds and it loses the sound when I play games, apps or music. But sounds were perfect for alarms, clocks, ringtones and everything else belongs to the operating system. Listening to the handsfree was ok but sometimes it also loses the sounds very sudden. It loses the sounds very instant and volume bar just disappeared or turns grey when touched. nothing comes up if you use side buttons to volume up and down. It was a big issue as I just love the sound quality of Apple devices. I put my head into the internet and found more than 10 ways to get rid of the problem. Some of the problems I tried are as:

1. I blown the air in headphone jack and charging jack to wipe out the dust.

2. I used the brush to wipe out the dust from all holes.

3. I restored the set in every single manner.

4. I plug in plug out several times the handsfree.

5. I deleted every single app if that was creating issue.

6. I checked for vibrate button if it was in vibrate mode.

7. I checked every settings from settings menu and individual apps.

8. I removed iCloud ID and all the data.

9. I checked AirDrop method.

But, not a single issue was helpful for me. Then I just found another way but I was afraid to try that because it was clearly mentioned that you are going to hit the hardware directly. I went to the mobile phone repairing expert friend as it's quite common in Pakistan as we've 10 repairers on each street. He helped me out in that way. Let's read what he did.

The Joker Method - (Puts A Blade in Her Mouth)

He opened the two screws that are well tighten within your phone's bottom area. He pushed the back plate slightly to up and the phone is now naked and I can see the battery. There is another small screw holding the battery jack. He removed that screw and battery as well so he can prevent my phone from shortage or short circuit while repairing. Once he was done with that, he took a paper cutter or carpet blade that is a quite common thing available within any home. He puts the blade in charging jack area under the 30 pins plate and slightly pushed the plate up with help of that blade. He pressed the blade upwards as he felt that charging jack was not in original place. He was done with that. He put all the screws and batteries in right orders. He switched on the phone. Corrected the date, time and especially YEAR so I was up to have GSM/GPRS signals. AND, I PLAY MUSIC, GAMES and everything was WORKING FINE!

He further explained me that if the problem remain same after some hours so please come back to replace the charging jack as it's always hardware issue and it's quite common among all iphone 4S devices. The replacement of charging jack will cost 7$ with repairing time of 20 minutes and 7 days guarantee for the sound. But I am happy as it's been 14 days and I am enjoying each and everything pretty wonderful on my iphone.

he finds that putting the phone into speaker dock basically misplace the charging jack as the phone is always on its weight when you put it on speaker dock. Or if you ever tried to hang the phone while charging so it may also caused the misplace in charging jack that was missing the sound.

PLEASE ALWAYS ASK TO EXPERTS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING TO YOUR PHONE AND DON'T EVER TRY THESE METHODS IF YOUR PHONE IS IN WARRANTY. PLEASE TRY IT AT YOUR OWN RISK AS I AM NOT LIABLE TO CAUSE OF ANY KIND OF PHYSICAL AND SOFTWARE DAMAGE TO YOUR PHONE.

I had this exact problem & whilst I cannot speak to the technical stuff behind the why I can say that those who said it's the charging/docking connectors seem to be spot on. I lost the sound, the little volume squares etc, charged the phone, jiggled it in the socket & sound back.

Thanks to all those who took the time to have their say & share their fix. It worked for me. Cheers!

This fix totally worked!! Thanks!

"I had this exact issue and have just fixed it today after much frustration. My problem was that if plugged into earphones or docked, my music etc would play fine but as soon as unplugged the sound would go. It may come back on intermittently but only for a few seconds. My ringer and alarms etc all work fine.

Having looked at others' solutions, I had tried cleaning the dock connector with a toothbrush and blowing into it. This didn't work.

However someone mentioned using a pin to clean the dock connector and this worked today. There didnt seem to be anything there but the sharp edges of the pin removed a visible film from the thin connector. There were also thin ridges at the top that i carefully ran the pin down. The problem is that fluff and dirt collect there and form a very thin film that make the iPhone believe that it is docked.

Try this. I hope you get it fixed and apple improve this in future models.

One tip... Make sure you are in good light so that you can see clearly into the connector."

iPhone 4S, iOS 5, Sound Problem

No Audible to my iPhone speaking apps. (iPad working just fine)

I believe it may have started with downloading the latest iOS5 version.

Problem: The bell icon showing sound volume was available but none of the white dots showing the volume.

My phone volume was also missing on the screen.

I am so relieved!

I now have sound!!!

Solution: Plugged my iPhone into my desktop computer/ went to iTunes/synced

my apps/ and Voila – The sound came back….The bell icon…..the volume dots

and the screen are all restored.
