How do I prevent iTunes 11.0.3 from opening automatically when I connect my iPhone?

The selection in iPhone/Summary/Options is no longer visible after the last update.

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.4, snow leopard

From the iTunes menu at the top go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically. Check the box at the bottom of that window. Click OK, quit iTunes.

That will stop iTunes from launching when you connect the phone stop automatic syncing.

The dratted iTunes open on BOTH computers, whether Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Matters not.

And it is NOT related to plugging in my iPhone 4S. It opens several times a day, even when I have one computer CLOSED and it is sleeping.

Talk about BUGGY Mac. This is most annoying !

I have all of the appropriate boxes checked and ALWAYS HAVE. This came with the last bunch of updates.

What a MESS ~ If I did not have Wondershare TransPod for which iTunes open in the background, I would get completely rid of iTunes.... as bad as every Micro$oft product ever made. Comletely out of control and invasive. Worst Mac app ever !

I have the same issue with iTunes 11.1 opening every time I connect my new iPhone 5S. I did not have this issue with my previous version of iTunes nor any of my previous phones.

I remember in older versions of iTunes there used to be a specific option to check or uncheck iTunes from opening when an iPhone, iPod or iPad was connected

BTW, iTunes Helper is not one of my account's login item.

This is very frustrating and annoying.

I had the same problem with iTunes 11.0.4 and an iPhone 5 on Mac OS X 10.7.5; iTunes launched on every connect and there was no option to stop iTunes opening when the iPhone was connected on the summary page for me either.

I just wanted to say that checking then unchecking "manually manage music and videos" and "sync only checked songs and videos" without clicking apply as you mentioned trying also resolved this issue for me.

Thank you!

This exact method worked for me on an iPhone 4s and iTunes 11.1.0.126. I'm not sure how or why, but iTunes doesn't automatically open when I plug in my phone anymore thankfully. I didn't have the option to stop it on my summary page either, but I do remember when it used to be there.

This is the answer below. iTunes Helper is a process that runs and checks for a phone or ipod being connected, and then launches iTunes if it is. If iTunes Helper isn't running and you connect your phone, iTunes won't launch.

You need to remove iTunes Helper from your login items. Restart after that, or force iTunes Helper to quit using Activity Monitor.

See if iTunes Helper is in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items

If so, delete it.

This is the solution that works for me:

Context:

  • Windows 7 & 8 desktops and laptops
  • Latest version of iTunes - 11.1.3.8
  • I have 1 iPhone and 2 iPads

Soltution:

  • Plug in iPhone or iPad, the device will appeaar near the top right.
  • User uploaded file
  • Select the device and the options dialogue opens
  • Turn off automatically sync iPhone.when connected

User uploaded file

  • Close iTunes
  • Unplug device
  • Plug device back in and iTunes will not automaticalluy launch

I found two methods:

1.) You need to connect your device(s), select it in iTunes and navigate to the "Summary" page. Under the "Options" section there is a check box for "Open iTunes when this <device> is connected". Un-check this box.

User uploaded file

2.) If you are using Windows 7, you can go to control panel, select "Hardware and Sound", then select "Auto Play", then choose the appropriate action for the device (i.e. "Take no action").

Hope this helps!

I had the same thing happen to me. iTunes was automatically launching. I finally figured out it was because of my bluetooth stereo speakers. Every time I connected to my external bluetooth speakers, by either turning my bluetooth speakers on or turning my MacBook bluetooth on using the Menu bar icon control, iTunes launches.

So, at least now I know why iTunes is launching automatically. It is because somehow iTunes is 'configured' to automatically launch when a bluetooth speaker of some sort becomes connected to my MacBook.

What I don't know is how to disable that behavior.

It seems kind of intrusive and disruptive that iTunes would 'assume' that every time I connect a bluetooth speaker I'm going to want to play music using iTunes. I have not used iTunes for music in several years. Maybe if iTunes/Apple had a decent streaming music service that was 1/2 as good as Spotify, I would, but I still would not want iTunes to ASSUME that I'm going to use it and launch itself.

I'll start iTunes when I WANT to use iTunes. It is annoying that it is launching itself. Apple thinks it knows better than I do when I want to use iTunes. I THINK NOT.

If anyone figures this out, I would be very interested in knowing how to DISABLE iTunes from automatically launching based on when bluetooth devices are connected.

I hope this helps someone.

How do I prevent iTunes 11.0.3 from opening automatically when I connect my iPhone?
