From the iTunes menu at the top go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically. Check the box at the bottom of that window. Click OK, quit iTunes.
That will stop iTunes from launching when you connect the phone stop automatic syncing.

omg thank you! i've been trying to figure this out for weeks! 🙂
Found the answer folks - To go to the sync for each device, you have to double click on that device
The entire menu for that phone will be shown:
Click on Summary and at the bottom of that page under options, you'll see the box checked off for Automatically sync when iPhone is connected. Uncheck that box. Now you're done.
You're welcome. I'm happy that I was able to help somebody here. 🙂
Then quit iTunes. Disconnect iPhone. Reconnect; iTunes won't start;I've just verified this.
OK. Thank you for the instructions, I am really pleased iTunes won't be opening when I plug my phone in to charge it when the battery is low. Very helpful sir. 10 star rating haha
But I have a question, so having checked the box to stop devices from auto syncing, iTunes won't open anymore unless I want to open it. Will this affect the wifi sync? See the problem doesn't lie within the syncing but with the first process of iTunes opening up. I hope this won't turn off the wifi sync...
If Demo or anyone else with knowledge on this could answer this, that would be awesome.
thanks

Turning off auto syncing does not affect WiFi syncing at all. It will affect auto syncing over WiFi, but not syncing over WiFi. I have never used auto sync and I always use WiFi syncing with iTunes, but since I do not auto sync, I have to launch iTunes and then initiate the sync on my own, either from iTunes on my computer or from the settings on my iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch,
I find it strange that only one person found s.jungels's solution on p.2 to be the only one that worked (that would be me). Thanks, s.jungels!
Thank you for posting this question/problem. I had the same issue with iTunes 12.2.2 with an iMac 10.7.5 and iPhone SE iOS 9.3.1
I called Apple support and it was resolved in a peculiar way. I hope this helps!
on the iPhone, go to SETTINGS,
then to iCloud and turn it on,
then BACK UP NOW.
Done
This resolved the issue of iTunes launching when I plugged the phone into the iMac.
I know it sounds strange, but it worked and it was a tip directly from Apple Support.
Good luck to you!
Just delete it - it's a junk app and Apple won't fix it - here is how: http://www.addictivetips.com/mac-os/uninstall-or-disable-itunes-on-mac-os-x/
I have the same issue. It is annoying, everytime when i connect my phone to my laptop i get very angry. Make it easy APPLE!! i will delete this app next time if this issue will not solve!😠
