Yeah this is getting more and more ridiculous. I feel like they're just figuring out a way to save face. I think it's just a matter of time before they address this issue. If this many people have had the same issue, I'm really hoping Apple has the wisdom to treat its customers well in situations like this.

Just adding myself to the list... MacBook Air mid-2012, my SSD has completely disappeared. It's not found as a startup disk.

Appointment with Apple Store tomorrow. I'm covered, so I'm hoping for a quick replacement of the SSD.

For once I have been responsible and have both time machine backups and a superduper clone (that I'm booted into right now). I had previously thought I would never see a disk failure on my Air, but this episode has disabused me of that notion!

Same problem here. 13" MBA mid 2012 purchased in September. All of a sudden system crashes and I get the flashing folder of death.

Took it to an authorised dealer ( No apple presence in Austria). They sent it in for drive replacement. I got it back yesterday. Same thing happens with in an hour of use. Took it back. The service guy said they didn't replace the ssd but just reinstalled the OS.

( they took 2 weeks....) So now this authorised dealer told me he will reinstall the os......cause that worked wonders, if fails he will send it in for repairs..... Thats after it was in "repairs" for 2 weeks.... However he said he could see the drive even though the system can't.

To shed a little light on my activities leading up to the second crash - I initiated the software update process. Upon completeing the download the instalattion process failed and said it will tey again next time. That when the system started to sloooooooow down. Eventually i got a msg saying the system ran oit of space and thats when the poop hot the fan. Any advice? Im a masters student and really need it for my uni work. Do you think im justified to demand a loaner? Will ssd replacement solve it? Or will the ptoblem occur regardless of brand of ssd? Please Help ! (I've been without a laptop for 2 weeks now and counting!I'm going crazy)

I have the same or similar problem. I am temporarily in Poland and immediately took my mid-2012 MacBook Air (still under warranty) to an authorized service center in Warsaw. It's been there 3 weeks now and the replacement SSD has not arrived. They keep saying it should be there "soon." But what does that mean? They don't really know. Apple's reputation is really going down fast in my mind. I have been a loyal customer for many years but now I don't know any more. At least they should be able to say when the part will arrive. Or if it will never arrive, then they need to say that and help me with acquiring a replacement computer! I had my family contact Apple in the USA to see what they said. Their answer: "It could take a couple of weeks for the SSD to arrive." When told it was already 3 weeks, they had no comment. Clearly there is a very big issue out there. Soon they will be losing customers.

starting to wonder if it's linked to the pulled firmware upgrade.

Saw your video, nicely detailed, its not a firmware update 'issue' 😊

Your SSD controller failed on your Toshiba SSD, i.e. the SSD processor or "data bus"

The Toshiba SSD used at that time the sandforce controller, which was acquired by LSI corporation in Jan. 2012.

Macbook Air 2012 SSD, ......storage chips on right, SandForce controller on left as seen in your youtube video
