That's appears to be quite a few failed Sandforce Controllers all around the same time,

coinciednce? or a really bad batch from the factory.
I know there's enough failed at the same time to be told I have to wait an ESTIMATED 4 weeks for a replacement part. While I wait these for weeks, I'm using a USB3 flash drive to run my MacBook Air.
Not cool.

Thats just pure speculation,....

When it comes to waiting on computer parts,....the truth of the matter is that on older technology (of course anything 'a few months old' is 'old technology' when it comes to computers) manufacture has to be geared up on machinery making other things, ......a break in production to re-make "D" product when the mfg. is already working full force on "X" -generation product in the same category.

sorry about your wait, frustration always make most of us have tunnel vision 😊

I've worked in I.T. support for over 16 years,
and I know exactly what a constrained part means.
Regardless of speculation why there's no replacement SSDs, I know I have to wait a estimated 4 weeks,

and if I didn't know how to run my computer from an external USB drive,
and if I had not made a backup of my data and programs,

my ~£1000 computer with Applecare would be a dead expensive paperweight for 4 weeks.

Trust me, I do not have tunnel vision 😉

As an update to my earlier post reporting the problem...

The initial estimate at the Apple Store was a 2 to 3 day wait for a replacement SSD. I left the computer at the store. 6 days later I called the store and was told that the replacement SSD hadn't arrived and is listed as a "constrained part" in their system. The tech said this meant that he couldn't give me an eta for the replacement to arrive.

I too have encountered the dreaded folder with the blinking question mark with all of the same symptoms that other users have listed leading up to the failure. As an IT admin with a lot of tools at my disposal, the drive appears to be complete dead along with all of the data on it, say for an expensive data recovery ranging from $2500 to $3500. The computer is out of the 1 year warranty so I opted to buy the OWC replacement drive and I would highly reccomend it as an alternative to Apple's SSD to anyone who is outside of his or her warranty. All totalled, the bill was $187 w/ shipping and I bought the pentalobe screw driver and T5 torx to take the bottom cover off.

For those faced with a $300+ bill from Apple for a drive that's slower than OWC, has a warranty 1/3 the durration, and costs twice as much, the option is pretty clear. For the DYI kind, the link is below. (Seriously even for those who don't typically perform thier own repairs, its really really easy and there are numerous YouTube videos to help you out).

So after my 128GB Toshiba SSD died on my MacBook Air 11 inch 2012, 1 year and 3 months in to it's life cycle,

I had the part ordered at the Genius Bar, Covent Garden and the cost covered under Applecare extended warranty.

I was told the part was constrained and I would have to wait an estimated 4 weeks.
But to my surprise I got the call earlier this week the part was in, brought my MacBook Air to the store,

and had it repaired within 3 days, when I was told expected turn around was currently at 7-10 days.

Well done, Apple Covent Garden, you did well.

Also, I'm happy I took out Applecare as having to argue your case for the cost of repair out of warranty isn't fun at all.
