10.8.4 Screen Saver

I know some folks were having problems with their system screen savers in 10.8.2 and 10.8.3.

My problem was mainly with 10.8.2. Failed to activate a few times in 10.8.3, but then mysteriously healed itself.

Will 10.8.4 finally fix this problem?

Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't think it was mentioned in the 10.8.3 release notes either. Yet most of the system screen saver problems vanished at that time. Perhaps Apple doesn't tell us everything. My problem went away almost completely.

I had a screen saver fail to activate last week (10.8.3). Hopefully 10.8.4 includes a fix, even if Apple doesn't want to mention it.

It isn't that Apple doesn't want to mention it, more like it is viewed as a minor problem only for a few...with the other problems that needed to be addressed like WiFi connection after waking from sleep, screen savers are much smaller. Still need to be addressed and corrected, however.

See how the 10.8.4 build works on your platform and if there are problems give Apple the feedback. Bugs don't get fixed if they go unreported.

Bad Luck fellow Mac -ers, under Mac OS X Mountain Lion ( to quote from "OS X Mountain Lion - the Missing Manual", page 352):-

" Note: You can no longer install different screen-saver styles. And you no longer have a choice of different presentations for you own folders, like the amazing Collage mosaic (which built up one giant photo by using hundreds of smaller photos as individual pixels."

I find this type of functional curtailing of our cherished OS X by faceless Apple apparatchiks quite sinister. It generates echos of "MAD" magazine's Spy Vs Spy scripts, albeit without the humour. I had always believed the people at Apple valued the interlect of their users and revelled at possibilities to stimulate our cerebral processors. Perhaps I was somewhat "glossy eyed" OR we may have been infiltrated by our OS opposition. Beware !!

Interestingly, being a Dr. Who nerd, I downloaded a free, 32 bit screen saver application (Dr. Who Screensaver) from a BBC site which I WAS ABLE to add to the relevant System/Library/Sceen Savers folder. I could then select that screen saver in "System Preferences/Desktop and Screen Saver/Slideshows" which then loaded when scheduled BUT it flickered on screen with a message that a later version was required.

As the screen saver was free, I felt sure that the BBC sources would not be interested in updating the codes (or as may be) so I could run their screen saver on my beloved iMac. I'll try contacting the copyright owners Screentime Media for further help.

The point is - according to the Manual, I SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE to get as far as I did. Does anyone have any thoughts, please?

I hope this helps.

For what it's worth, this problem just started on my Mac Mini running 10.8.4 while my MBP running the same OS is fine. I followed numerous threads here, tried various fixes including rebooting, turning off spoken commands, resetting PRAM, fixing permissions--nothing helped.

Then I simply changed what screen saver I was using. It started working fine. Changed it to another one, that also worked. I haven't tried going back to the original yet to see whether it was a general glitch that I somehow reset, or the original sceensaver is corrupted somehow, but in the short term that seems to be related to the issue in my case.

Hope that helps.
