So long, Logic

I can't continue to base a potenial new career on a platform I don't know to be fully backed by its maker. Because of Apple's secrecy, we can't know for sure if they are waning from their pro apps or not. Everyone knows that Pro Tools is the industry standard, so if I'm going to spend money and time dedicating myself to the intricate depths of one product or another, I suppose I should do it in the one most recognized and most likely to be around in 10 years (I don't have time to learn multiple platforms).

I was and am a Logic fan but this isn't about technical merits. It's about ensuring an investment. I was hoping we migth hear something in all the WWDC announcements today (especially since a new Mac Pro was announced), but no. It's been many, many years and very little in the way of a commitment by Apple. If they're going to have the mentality of "we make a product, use ot or not; we may or may not ever enhance that product so you can build a career with it", then I can't know that I can build a career with it. So I suppose I won't.

Mmm.. I did have a try with that today and eventually got it to work (sending from Logic to Mixbus) using the Jack Pilot application, I think I must have something wrong because it doesn't sound good, though - not terrible, but not right - I'm only using an Apogee One anyway at the moment, so I can't do anything other than a one channel thing. I'll have another try anyway, its all a bit unfamiliar to me at the moment - I saved the configuration that I had in Jack Pilot, so I'll go back to that and take it from there.

To be honest, I'm thinking about it in a different way - maybe take stuff into Mixbus just to mix or even do sub-mixes (I do quite a lot of that kind of thing to build a whole piece of music), so there are ideas there to explore for me.

You obviously don't understand my point. It's not like choosing between XBox and Playstation for which video games to play. In that case, it's about personal preference as both are great and HERE TO STAY. Well, wait a minute-- maybe it is. What about VHS and Beta? What if you standardized on Beta and bought thousand of movies for your Sony Betamax only to see it go bye-bye oh so quickly. ****, can I eBay "Weekend at Bernies" on Beta?

But more to this point, it's about choosing a DAW platform upon which to base a career. To fully learn a platform takes much TIME and MONEY and no one is sure about the horse that Apple has out there because of their secrecy policy. I've seen software developers choose a platofrm and deep-dive and base their careers on it only to see it quickly deprecated. That puts you behind the curve in many ways.

If Apple would say that they intend to be a major player for the long-haul, I'd stick by them. But no releases and little acknowledge of their commitment to the product makes it an easy choice to defer to the industry standard in Pro Tools. Even with their company problems, that brand isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

And this is all too bad, because I prefer Logic.

Rcook349,

Sounds like you're stalling. Time to start making music.

It does not take a HUGE amount of money to learn a daw. It does take time, but usually any skills acquired on one daw translate to another. The concepts remain the same. Many musicians and audio pros I know work fluidly between Logic, DP, PT, Cubase, Abelton....Get with it. (Start with a reel-to-reel if you want, it doesn't matter. It's all about diving in.)

Good luck.

People worry that Apple will abandon Logic. People also worry that Avid will go out of business (and if it does, whether PT would continue on in a form they'd be happy with).

While some announcements from Apple would be a huge improvement, there's never any guarantee that any app will continue to be updated. If someone is using one that gets dumped, they can keep using the version they have as long as they want and then switch at some point to a different one.

So long, Logic
