Connect your phone to iTunes and (Alt/Option for mac, or Shift for Windows) on the Update button instead the restore button.

So the trick is to use the Update option rather than the Restore option. It is not clear if this works on other iOS devices as well (though iOS 7 beta is not yet available for the iPad).

I'm in the process of returning to 6.1.4. I wish I had seen the instructions for update instead of restore. The instructions must be wrong, which is kind of annoying. Either way, here's to hoping that this works.

If you use the DFU method you will lose all of your data, backups, etc. correct?

XCODE help a lot so I highly recommend y'all who have "activation error" then use xcode (apple store on app) and its work! (;

What if you register your UDID after the activation error will it process then? or do i still have to restore and lose everything?

I have a Developer account, the iPhone 4s is setup in the list of devices and I've gone back and forth between iOS7 and using DFU to downgrade to 6.1.3. Every time, iTunes disables "Check for Update" and I only have the option to "Restore iPhone", which leads me to the activation error.

How can I enable "Update" in iTunes?

If I try to use xCode, then every time I try to put the device in development mode it says the UDID is already entered into the account and won't let me do anything else.

i have the same problem but with find my iphone activated and i cant turn it off since i cant access my iphone, i removed the iphone from the icloud site, didnt help
