itunes doesn't recognize my iphone

I have performed all the recommended actions from the Apple support including uninstallng itunes. restarting phone, computer, etc. It still won't let me back up the phone. I have some techy friends who are experiencing the same problem. Apparently it is fairly recent?

iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.4

This is what I did and it worked perfectly. My problem was exactly the same. I think it may have something to do with the carrier. My Ipod was fine and so was my verizon Iphone 4. But I live in Japan now and have a Softbank Iphone 4S that would not connect. I found the link that I posted below and it solved my problem right away. Goodluck!!!

That article was amazing. Completed the steps for the 5th section like you said and the phone connected instantly. I've been scouring the internet for the past couple of days in hopes of finding someone who could help me with the issue even when I figured out the problem wasn't with my phone/cable as they're both working fine, people still tried to tell me I needed to reset my phone and start all over again.

Absolute life saver. I don't know what I would have done had I not found this forum...I was even contemplating a new laptop!
