kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

If you went from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, then that might explain why you never had the kernel panics before. If you were using Mountain Lion or Lion before Mavericks, then I would not jump to any conclusions about the cause of the kernel panics you are seeing.

A few things to try:

  1. Use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
  2. Look at the panic logs and look for non-Apple kernel extensions. Removing them might fix your issue.
  3. Do a clean OS install (maybe on a USB drive) and try to reproduce the kernel panics.

I did something silly just before my MacBook was repaired: I installed the video update for 10.6 even though my 10.6.8 was working just fine. Doing this actually made Snow Leopard panic too even though it was fine before. I used Time Machine (+some manual work) to restore the system and repaired permissions a couple of times, which fortunately managed to fix the issue. I'm telling this because while the hardware problem seems quite common, it's unfortunately not too hard to make a system unstable by messing with the software.

If you look for TS4088 (using Google or on this forum) and GPU panics, you'll find a lot of panic reports from other people. You can compare the panic logs you are getting (check them out in the Console app). If you find significant differences, there might be a software solution to your problem. If the logs are similar and you wish to use Mavericks, then the only known 100% reliable solution is to get the hardware repaired.

I took my mid-2010 MacBook Pro into the Apple Store (3 months out of warranty) and after requesting the TS4088 service through a manager was able to have my logic board (and battery) replaced under the recall offer, free of charge.

I haven't had a kernel panic since the replacement, and previously I was getting several a day using Mavericks. Also, make sure you back up your computer before doing this, as they will do a clean install of your OS.

Also, I took a look at the bill and apparently the fix would have cost around $350, which isn't so bad if you can't get a nice manager to honor the free repair.

I got my logic board replaced for free 7 months after the 3 years after purchase was up, but had they not they mentioned a $315 flat fee to replace it. Also, they did not do a clean install on mine, just replaced the logic board. Only had to update a few settings and was right back to my normal (though finally stable) desktop. I am now at one week after the repair and no kernel panics.

Nov 13, 2013 2:18 PM in response to Steven Strell2

nope, you're not alone. my genius ran the hardware test, agreed on the diagnosis, took it back to the manager, and brought it back with "sorry."

i've been subscribed to this thread for several months and i'm happy for all those who've received an upgrade after the deadline, esp when the problem did not even appear until after the repair program ended. but i am not one of those.

i could tell my "i've bought X apple computers since 1981" story but nobody, including me, actually cares, and esp apple.

Nov 13, 2013 2:54 PM in response to kylefromns

I have exactly the same model and problem as all the others here. Sadly the TS4088 hardware test does not produce a "positive" result. So they want to charge me 450,- € here in Berlin.

I bought it in 03.2011 for a reduced price. I wonder if they knew?

Has anybody had problem with his new motherboard? I don´t want to spend that money to get the same **** again after 2.5 years.

btw. It´s not a Maveriks problem because I got the panics also with 10.6.8 😟

Nov 20, 2013 11:35 AM in response to Saxifraga

Just found this thread. I've never had this problem in the year that I've had my MBP on Lion, but it's started doing it on Mavericks. It seems to panic when I run iMovie 10. No problem with iMovie 9.0.9.

I think I had it panic with another app, but generally it seems OK, just when trying to run iMovie 10 :-/

Kind of disappointed that it's just happened when it's probably run out of it's warranty. I will have to see if my local Apple Store are feeling nice.

Nov 22, 2013 1:31 AM in response to Eddy5

I think I may have cured my problem. After some investigation online and examining the console logs I removed the following kernel extensions listed in the log file

com.aladdin.kext.aksfridge1.0.2
com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower1.6.6

The Soundflower driver was a simple run of the uninstall script and reboot, the aladdin driver wasn't so obvious but someone else on the this discussion thread reckoned it was the Xrite i1 calibration software

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4446013?answerId=20064146022#20064146022

I've stopped the driver from loading (Using CleanMyMac2) and stopped the i1 software running too.

So far I can start iMovie 10 with no issues and my Mac seems stable again.

It's early days of course, but it looks promising.

Hope this helps anyway else with the issue, it's well worth examining the console log file in detail if you can, it may point to what's causing the panic.

Nov 30, 2013 7:59 AM in response to Steven Strell2

Probably. I brought mine in with this issue and it's out of warranty so it will cost me $380 for the motherboard replacement. Of course it didn't start becoming a major issue until the Maverick upgrade, but I really don't want to go through the hassle of downgrading.

No plans to pay for an obvious hardware defect, currently shopping for a new laptop and will gut the SSD on my unreliable and very expensive MB Pro for a $389 Lenovo Yoga -- I'll get a CPU bump and will get back to the Ubuntu ecosystem.

The hardware was great while it lasted, but I can't afford $1500 a year for a laptop.

Dec 3, 2013 2:22 PM in response to shouldhaveboughtadell

For the people who received out of warranty repair, did you say anything specific? Or did they kind of help themselves into saying Oh yeah we'll go ahead and take care of this for you? I purchased my MBP in June, 2010. So I'm roughly 6 months past warranty. The only thing that really itches me is the fact that I took my MBP into Apple last year for the same reason... except it was happening a LOT less frequently. Now it happens everytime I turn on the PC guaranteed. The genius bar expert told me to "upgrade my ram, that's probably the reason why you're getting black screens playing World of Warcraft"... yeah bud, NOT. So he bought Apple enough time for my warranty to expire.

Dec 3, 2013 3:55 PM in response to hazend

I took my MBP into Apple last year for the same reason...

^^ that is what gets you the repair. You had an earlier vist for this problem, and it did not get solved. There should be a record that you has a visit then, even if they did not take appropriate notes.

Try not to be too snarky about the "you delayed it so long it is now out of warranty...", because they probably did not do that on purpose, they did the best they could with the tools they had at the time.

kernel panic, looks GPU related
